NIR Bitton thanked his team-mates and the Celtic staff for helping him through one of the most difficult periods of his career as he prepares to mark his return to action after nearly a year on the sidelines.

The Hoops midfielder has been out of action since February after picking up a knee injury which required surgery, but he is now at the end of his long road back to recovery and cannot wait to start playing again.

In an exclusive interview with Celtic TV, the 27-year-old midfielder reflected on what has been a difficult year and said he could not have come through it without the help and support of everyone at the club and his family.

“When you’re out for nine or 10 months you start questioning whether you’ll be back in your form again," Bitton said. "You start thinking the worst and that’s why you need to surround yourself with the people who you trust will support you, whatever it takes.

“To be honest, last year, the first two or three months after surgery were really tough for me. I couldn’t really walk or drive at that point, but thankfully I had a good neighbour in Patrick Roberts, so he was like a second wife to me! He helped me a lot and I appreciated that.

“The manager, medical staff, the physios and everyone around me have been very supportive. They would have a chat with me sometimes and try to give me a little bit of a lift. When I look back on it, I can see that it was absolutely helping me.”

Now that he is nearing the end of his recovery, Bitton said his return to action will be a special moment for him.

“I can’t even describe how much I’m looking forward to getting back to playing,” he said. “The first game where I’m in the squad I might be crying in my room. It’s been a tough time for me.

“We have a big chance this year to great an even greater history than we’ve created over the last two years. We just need to stay focused for the second half of the season and keep going the same way as we have been over the last two years.”

Looking forward to having him back in the team. So comfortable on the ball and will be of use to us in Europe.

Off the top of my head he was our best player against Inter at the San Siro, excellent against Man City at home, and even at centre back at home against Bayern.

Politics aside, harshly treated IMO for his football.

Won't be against having him around the squad again.

One of my favourite players, hope he can get back to his best and provide some serious competition in midfield. Could do with a player like him sitting in there for certain games. Also a great lad and a good character, would love to have a pint with him.

A legend in the making, as per my sig.

In all seriousness it'll be great to have him back. Composed on the ball and an extra option for midfield and centre half.

Think some have short memories in here. Bitton has his work cut out to get on our bench these days

Just to add to that. Watching Scotland vs Israel I thought to myself I miss kayal at Celtic, always liked him but then, he wouldn't get in our midfield more. And I have kayal pegged higher than bitton
