    BBC predictions for the spl

    Nickname: The Dons
    Ground: Pittodrie
    Capacity: 22,199
    Position last season: 11th
    Manager: Jimmy Calderwood

In: Derek Adams, Steven Craig, Scott Severin, Ciaran Donnelly
Out: Scott Booth, Kevin Rutkiewicz, Scott Michie, David Zdrilic.

BBC Sport verdict: New manager Jimmy Calderwood will hope to transform the Dons' fortunes just as he did with Dunfermline. He has a tough task and needs a striker, but the addition of experienced players like Derek Adams and Scott Severin should help the young squad.
    Key man: Scott Severin

    CELTIC

    Latest club news

    Nickname: The Hoops
    Ground: Celtic Park
    Capacity: 60,294
    Position last season: 1st
    Manager: Martin O'Neill

    In: Henri Camara
Out: Henrik Larsson, Liam Miller, Johan Mjallby, Jamie Smith.

BBC Sport verdict: How Celtic cope without Henrik Larsson will be key to their hopes of retaining their title. They still have a very impressive set of players and must start the season as championship favourites.
    Key man: Chris Sutton

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    DUNDEE

    Latest club news

Nickname: The Dees / Dark Blues
    Ground: Dens Park
    Capacity: 13,565
    Position last season: 7th
    Manager: Jim Duffy

In: Iain Anderson, John Sutton, Glenn Atle Larsen, Bobby Mann, Neil Barrett
Out: Nacho Novo, Julian Speroni, Steven Milne, Lee Mair, Dave, Mackay, Jason Walker.

BBC Sport verdict: This could be an exceptionally difficult season for Jim Duffy and his players after losing so many crucial members of the squad. If they can steer clear of relegation, it will be a success.
    Key man: Barry Smith

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    DUNDEE UNITED

    Latest club news

    Nickname: The Terrors / Tangerines
    Ground: Tannadice
    Capacity: 14,209
    Position last season: 5th
    Manager: Ian McCall

    In: James Grady
Out: Paul Gallacher, Craig Easton, Charlie Miller, Jim Paterson, Owen Coyle.

BBC Sport verdict: Ian McCall has been limited in his activity in the transfer market this summer, though he would have liked to have replaced players like Charlie Miller who have left. Any improvement on last season seems unlikely.
    Key man: James Grady

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    DUNFERMLINE

    Latest club news

    Nickname: The Pars
    Ground: East End Park
    Capacity: 12,509
    Position last season: 4th
    Manager: David Hay

    In: Simon Donnelly, Jamie Langfield.
Out: Stevie Crawford, Lee Bullen, David Grondin, Marco Ruitenbeek, Sean Kilgannon.

BBC Sport verdict: Dunfermline are another club who have failed to replace an important player, in their case Stevie Crawford. Nonetheless, new boss Davie Hay is used to more trying circumstances and should have the Pars in the higher reaches of the table.
    Key man: Barry Nicholson

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    HEARTS

    Latest club news

    Nickname: The Jam Tarts
    Ground: Tynecastle
    Capacity: 18,000
    Position last season: 3rd
    Manager: Craig Levein

In: Jamie McAllister, Ramon Pereira, Matthew Doherty, Michael Stewart
Out: Scott Severin, Andy Kirk, Steven Boyack, Austin McCann, Paul McMullan, Liam Fox.

BBC Sport verdict: Craig Levein has moved astutely in the transfer market over the summer and there is little to suggest that they will be ousted from their position as the third force in Scottish football. Whether they can close the gap on the Old Firm is another question.
    Key man: Mark de Vries

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    HIBERNIAN

    Latest club news

    Nickname: Hibees
    Ground: Easter Road
    Capacity: 16,039
    Position last season: 8th
    Manager: Tony Mowbray

In: Simon Brown, David Murphy, Dean Shiels, Sam Morrow, Gary Caldwell, Guillaume Beuzelin.
Out: Matthias Doumbe, Daniel Andersson, Roland Edge, Yannick Zambernardi, Nick Colgan, Alan Reid.

BBC Sport verdict: Tony Mowbray was a surprise choice as manager and he will have to provide results early on if he is to convince the Hibs support he is the right man for the job. He has a clutch of talented young players at his disposal and their experience last season should help.
    Key man: Derek Riordan

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    INVERNESS

    Latest club news

    Nickname:
    Ground: Pittodrie (groundshare with Aberdeen)
    Capacity: 22,199
    Position last season: Newly promoted
    Manager: John Robertson

In: Graham Bayne, Ian Black, Liam Fox, Juanjo, Darren Dods, Richard Hastings.
Out: David Bingham, Bobby Mann, Paul Ritchie.

BBC Sport verdict: While Caley Thistle's first season in the top division will undoubtedly be difficult, John Robertson will feel his side can compete with the teams at the lower end of the SPL. A small squad could be one of their biggest problems.
    Key man: Barry Wilson

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    KILMARNOCK

    Latest club news

    Nickname: Killie
    Ground: Rugby Park
    Capacity: 18,128
    Position last season: 10th
    Manager: Jim Jefferies

In: Alan Combe, Gary Wales, Peter Leven.
Out: Gary McSwegan, Steve Fulton, Alan Mahood, Martin Hardie, Colin Meldrum, Francois Dubourdeau, Barry McLaughlin.

BBC Sport verdict: Killie were unimpressive last season and could be among the strugglers again. Like most clubs they have down-sized their squad and much depends on how they cope with that.
    Key man: Kris Boyd

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    LIVINGSTON

    Latest club news

    Nickname: Livi Lions
    Ground: City Stadium
    Capacity: 10,000
    Position last season: 9th
    Manager: Allan Preston

In: Craig Easton, Jason Dair, Marc Libbra, Goran Stanic, Gus Bahoken, Jim Hamilton,
Out: Marvin Andrews, Lee Makel, Alan Main, John Paul McGovern.

BBC Sport verdict: It has been a trying few months at Livingston but stability seems to have been restored at last. New manager Allan Preston has brought in a number of new players and must hope they can gel quickly to keep Livi safe.
    Key man: Stuart Lovell

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    MOTHERWELL

    Latest club news

    Nickname: The Steelmen / 'Well
    Ground: Fir Park
    Capacity: 13,742
    Position last season: 6th
    Manager: Terry Butcher

In: Brian Kerr, Jim Paterson, Richie Foran
Out: Derek Adams, Steven Craig, Keith Lasley, Jason Dair.

BBC Sport verdict: Terry Butcher's young side over-achieved last season and a huge amount of credit for that must go to the manager. Having lost two or three key players, Butcher will need all of his managerial nous to emulate last year's performance.
    Key man: David Clarkson

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    RANGERS

    Latest club news

    Nickname: The Gers
    Ground: Ibrox
    Capacity: 50,411
    Position last season: 2nd
    Manager: Alex McLeish

In: Dado Prso, Nacho Novo, Marvin Andrews, Jean Alain Boumsong, Alex Rae, Dragan Mladenovic.
Out: Mikel Arteta, Ronald de Boer, Frank de Boer, Henning Berg, Egil Ostenstad, Christian Nerlinger, Nuno Capucho, Emerson, Michael Mols, Steven McLean, Andy Dowie, Darryl Duffy, Billy Gibson.

BBC Sport verdict: This is a huge season for Rangers and Alex McLeish. The manager has brought in a number of new players without being allowed to spend the millions afforded to his predecessors and he has to mould them into a winning team if he is to keep his job.
    Key man: Nacho Novo
