    The media refusing to touch the McGregor story in case they didn’t get access to him for future fights or them actually believing McGregor has retired and now telling the story.

    I think retirement is a bit of an irrelevance at this stage. He hasn’t been the same person since the Mayweather fight never mind the same fighter. He’s got his money, he’s got his family, but if you’re as far off the rails as he appears to be you can lose it all. He needs to get it together.

    In terms of his UFC career, there’s not too much that makes sense from a risk/reward perspective. There’s basically a whole host of dangerous fights out there for him, many of which would be against guys the general public have very little idea of.

    Far off the rails in what respect? He’s released a whisky and clothing brand range and both have went from nought to 100 at an unprecedented rate. Everything else is just rumour and the internet. Unless you mean stamping on someone’s phone. Scaled off Tony Ferguson’s current predicament...

    He’s not retired, he’s also not daft enough to know the money he makes for being punched in the face direct from the UFC pales in comparison to what the consequence of that does to his overall brand. He’ll fight again.

    His rise was something else. Challenging everyone and fighting all the time.

    But when you get arrested more than you fight and retire more than you defend your title it becomes boring.

    It is mostly rumour, but I would be very surprised if the rumours about drugs, week long parties, affairs etc were all, entirely without any truth. When you combine it with some of the comments from Kavanagh and others around him/MMA it doesn’t paint the picture of a man who is content.

    He may not be ‘far of the rails’ but his current trajectory isn’t an altogether great one, and plenty of high level fighters have gone down a very similar path before.
