Excellent to get him tied down, plenty of more quality performances in Lustigs career yet, I'm sure of that. 2 years with an additional 1 year option is ideal for all parties.

Mikael Lustig is expected to commit his future to Celtic this week with long term negotiations believed set to reach a positive conclusion.

The 30-year-old Swedish internationalist was signed by Neil Lennon in 2012 from Rosenborg and has been a mainstay of the Hoops defence.

Talks regarding a contract extension have been ongoing for the past few months with the player who is out of contract at the end of the season, but Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has previously spoken of his desire to keep the right-back at the club, citing him as one of the key members of his team.

The news will be met with satisfaction from Rodgers who told journalists last month that: “Mikael’s one I definitely want to keep. The club is in discussions with his agent.

“I think he wants to stay. It’s probably his last major contract and when you get to that age, you want to make sure everything is right. It has to be right for you.

“He wants to be here and he knows I want him here. It’s relaxed, there’s no drama.

“He’s an important player for us, one of the pillars of the group. In any squad, there are four or five players and he’s definitely one.

“He’s a great character and his commitment to training is fantastic. He’s a fun guy, but he knows when to focus and he’s up for every single game. He’s been excellent since I came in.”

Glowing reports from Brendan there. That's the positivity I love to see our players have. I know what Brendan means. The successful Liverpool of the 80s had a few guys like Lustig as their pillars. Get it signed Lustig son.

CELTIC are delighted to announce that Mikael Lustig has signed a contract extension which will see him remain at the club until at least May 2019.
The 30-year-old Swedish internationalist joined the club five years ago following a spell with Norwegian side, Rosenborg, and he has gone to become an integral part of the team’s success over the past few seasons.
He made his debut for the Hoops in March 2012, playing in a 1-1 draw against Aberdeen at Pittodrie, and to date he has made a total of 166 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals. He has won four league titles, one Scottish Cup and two League Cups, the most recent of them coming back in November when he helped Brendan Rodgers’ side beat Aberdeen in the final at Hampden.
While he has played the majority of his games for club and country at right-back, Mikael has also shown himself to be equally adept playing in a central defensive role where his experience has proved beneficial to the team, and will continue to do so in the future.

Good stuff, I think his days are numbered at right-back but he could be used at centre-back for years to come yet. Good experienced player and a leader.

Great news. Delighted to see we got this done. With Gordon in goals, Lustig and Tierney at full back and Svaitchenko we have almost the whole back line settled in for the next few years which is a great foundation of strength to have as Brendan Rodgers continues to build his team. Hopefully Simunovic will see this and the potential and buy in and look to become part of the long term furniture of Rodgers team as well.
