Beats anything I have seen so far and ever will in my lifetime. Better than Maradonna in my opinion.

The game has changed so much in the last few decades that any debate is pretty much worthless in my opinion. Messi is the best I have ever seen. Whether he is better than Pele, I dont know, and I suspect 99% of people should not have an opinion either unless they happened to watch Pele play every week!

I don't care what age you are, what you have seen or where you have been to see them.

Messi is a better player than any other footballer player that has ever lived. I have no doubts about that at all.

This, i just instinctively laugh when he goes on one of his runs, i can't help but laugh at how he does it, it's just unbelievable.

Only seen videos of Pele and no doubting his ability but Messi is unbelieveable.

His last goal today was magnificent, ran at full speed with the ball never out of his control (outpaced another opponent at the same time) taking a dunt from a sliding challage kept his balance and produce a composed finish.

Our opinions will differ(as will it from many others), however I would rather spend time talking about players like Pele,Maradonna,Zidane,Cruyff, Van Basten et al, than trying to bracket individuals like Lampard,Giggs,Scholes, Ibrahimovic,Robinho,Tevez (all talented) but not on the same level.

Another hat trick tonight for Messi. Pele has always been the best I have seen, but Messi is only 24 and WILL be the best ever. :50:

Well neither the * are you, you bitter, old, self-publicising *. :bbpd:

I put Maradonna, Beckenbauer and Cruyff well ahead of the old impotent *.

Edit: In fact Pele is not even the greatest Brazilian player!

Age old argument. As I'm a man of the 21st century, I'll say Messi. The fact that he's nowhere near as arrogant as Pele definitely cements him in that spot for me. Very honorable.

I've only ever seen videos of Pele play and I'd say he's better. It's got to be true, Pele said so.

Messi is the one player in the world that produces at least one 'How the * did you do that' moments per game. Truly unbelieveable player.

I've seen videos of Pele and in terms of how they look as a footballer, I would say Brazilian Ronaldo was better than him. At his peak he was peerless.

The only reason Pele is held in such high regard was how prolific he was and over the length of time he did it.

If we're talking pure talent then Ronaldo was better than Pele. Ronaldinho was too. Pele was one of football's first superstars which helps his case when discussing past greats.

    Maradona for me too.

Think Messi will overtake him at some point. I don't think the world cup point is irrelevant. Messi is playing with probably the best midfield ever assembled at Barcelona, guys he's been playing with for years and years and has an acute understanding of their play. Until he replicates that with his own countrymen he can't be held above Maradona who lifted mediocre teams like Napoli and the 1986 Argentina squad into greatness, and played against worse hatchetmen.

    Both better than Pele though.

I don't get this 'he will overtake him at some point' debate when discussing Maradona and Messi.

Messi is all the man he is ever going to be and if he improves as a footballer it will be marginally because there's little left to improve.

There's a difference between the greatest player and the most acclaimed one. Guys like Seedorf start to come into the equation if we're only discussing cups and titles.

Read the rest of my post after that. If Messi even continues in the same form for a few years he will have earned the right to be judged the best ever. He also needs to prove he can do it among a weaker group of players than he has played with at the one club he's been with so far.

    Why?

Do we judge a footballer and his ability on how he can carry lesser players around him? It's not as if the other players make him the player he is, they certainly aid him, but his talent with a football at his feet is without question.
