    What a * Pele is at times, I used to admire him but now he comes across as a total *. Btw I personally think once Messi retires he will be known as the greatest ever.

    I am not an older one that knows. :icon_mrgreen:

    But at one point I got into doing a bit of research about Pele, finding all the video clips I could etc, and I ended up with the conclusion that he had actually been better than Maradona, which I had previously not believed.

    And while his recent pronouncements have made me cringe, I agree with him that Messi has a long way to go to be proclaimed a greater player - especially on the international front. I mean, almost 1300 goals in his career? Messi's gonna have to score 50 a year till he's about 45 to equal that one...

    Pele goal count is a bit of a farce to be honest.

    It was a lot easier to score goals back then as well.

    I also allow for the fact that people tend to want the best player of their own age to be the best of all time - despite the fact that is statistically quite unlikely. I think older folk who lived through both players' careers would be a better judge than most of us on here. And in my experience they tend to say Pele.

    It all depends on what you consider the most essential skills in football.

    Is it dribbling? Messi has that.

    Shooting? Ronaldo has that.

    Heading the ball? Pele had that.

    More dribbling? Garincha had that.

    George Best had the lot.

    Or y'know, leadership, determination, intelligence, tackling, assertiveness,etc.

    I don't think a player could truly be named "The Greatest" until they have retired. However * only knows what carnage Messi will cause when he hits his peak around 28-30.

    Not old enough to have lived through Pele's career but I have Maradona and seen the likes of Cruyff in the flesh and imo Messi is the best player of all time. By quite a distance as well. The fact he has not won the WC means little either as the vast majority of international football is garbage compared to club football and Messi has done against the very best on a regular basis.
