Yes but in a sensible debate on the Death P
That is the thing it really is down to opinion but there is no reason why it cannot be debated at a sensible level.
In my opinion there has to be a really good rehabilitation system set in place for the vast majority of Prisoners, that is beyond important. But what about the Severe minority who will always be a danger to society at the very least?

It would be very interesting how a National Referendum on the Death Penalty would go.
I would certainly not be in favour of the American System in any shape or form and anyway such is their Gun Culture alone whether there was a death penalty or not there are going to be plenty of body bags to be counted.
Then of course the cost of looking after some of these Evil people who have committed Terrible Crimes. They will have far more spent on them than many a child in poverty etc etc etc
Like i said it is down to opinion.

More than half the UK oppose it.

    Why now ?

The same type of * who clamour for the death penalty now would just be the same type of * that were screaming "Hang IRA *" all through the 70's,80's and 90's. What do you think that would have achieved ? I can't see anyway it would have helped anybody.

I'm opposed to the death penalty myself, mainly because the ones dishing out the sentences are the real criminals. But it's worth noting that it costs around 60k per prisoner per year to keep someone locked up in a high security jail, which is probably why the UK has such a lenient parole system.

Besides, the UK sentences hundreds of people to death every year, we just don't hear about it all that much.

Out of site, out of mind and all that.

    @cidermaster
    What about IRA volunteers?

You cited some monsters but what about those who believe they are fighting for a righteous cause?

Where do you draw the line for capital punishment?

It's a slippery slope cider and one I hope we never go down.

I am of course talking about a sensible debate here. And i certainly would not want a hand out death penalties all over the show system.
At the very least surely the monsters I have mentioned and others of that evil class should have zero chance of parole.
That is why you have a sensible debate. The debate looks at both sides. And if at the end of the debate it is agreed that Evil Monsters are never put back into society then we have got somewhere.
One case really sticks out back in the day. An evil piece of * raped and murdered a Paperboy but was let out after just
9 and a half years!! Guess what not long after he was back in society he raped and attacked and raped another Paperboy!
We must have a system when Evil Monsters like that never get back out the first time round.

But as I said why now ? 'Free thinking sun readers'have always wanted the death penalty n do now. How can you have a 'sensible debate now" if you ignore the past n the lessons of history ?

But it is a sensible debate,an open minded free thinking debate. And I have made it very clear i do not want a system that hands out the death penalty like sweets.
It is a debate and if all Evil pieces of * never get parole that does me more than big time. Still not happy it costs a fortune to look after the evil *,but I am more than willing to compromise.

But's it's not sensible debate just because you keep saying it is.

You have said you would ignore precedent and past events and just go by pretty much the last thing you have seen on the news.

You want everyone to have a vote but look what a mess that has created with folk wanting ignore the result as people didn't understand what they are voting for. Yet everyone is qualified to vote on complexities of this ?

You are just using emotive one of incidents which again is not sensible.

Look at the language you are using "evil pieces of *", "evil *". I am losing your argument with all these complex legal terms.

You say "this would do me big time" tbf what would do you big time is completely irrelevant to me.

Anyway there isn't going to be a referendum on this so it is all irrelevant.
