there a difference between Bias and appreciation of ability, you seem to think Messi is overrated. Maybe the best ever tag is slightly premature

but, can you argue that he is the worlds best?

no, but there is also an extreme bias, clearly.
Cristiano for me is the best in the world, but that is because im also bias towrds madrid, and his type of play, football as a game is dominated by personal view and opinions, nothing will change that :50:

No question for me he is the best player in the world right now and has been for a couple of years.

His goal the other night was superb, granted it was gifted on a plate. When the ball came to him he looked at the goalkeeper( when many would have been more interested in controlling the ball), controlled the ball rounded the keeper and despite the ball getting stuck under his feet, he buried it from a tight angle.

A replay to show any footballer even his fellow professinals on how it is done.

Fabregas took his goal well the too.

Is he better than el diego, maybe not just yet. Once argentina get a good manager in then we shall see.

Diego Maradonna has never and would never be able to compete with Messi's goalscoring record and that's a fact.

He also never scored and had been a key player in 2 European Finals by the age of 24. Messi's domination of the Champions League matches Maradonnas World Cup exploits for me.

I agree Devlin. The Champions League is the pinnacle of football now. In my eyes anyway and in the eyes of well respected people in the game like Fergie.

Messi's yet to beat his record on both club and international level. Also Maradona was key player in one European competition final, despite not having a team around him that was anywhere near the quality of current Barca side. That's one thing Messi will probably never achieve - carry an average/solid team on his own.

World Cup is still the big stage, despite CL being strongest competition nowadays.

I think the bottom statement is telling. Champions League is now the big stage.

Maradonna at no point in his career has scored the amount of goals that Messi did last season and the year before. Diego is still the man, the best ever in my opinion but by the end of Messi's career it will be him.

    What about Pele?

3 World Cups and 2 World Club Cups, 3 World Cup final goals, 7 Club World Cup final goals :celt_2:

Plus 2 Copa Libertadores and 3 Cup final goals.

Pele I can't judge as I've never sat and watched a full 90 minute game from him, I've watched back games of Maradonna and he was just an utter genius, joy to watch.

Although according to my granda he swears down dead that the best player he ever saw is Di Stefano :icon_mrgreen:

The Champions League is the pinnacle of football, the highest standard you will find on the planet. The greatest player ever to play in that competition is Lionel Messi.

I've only watched footage of Maradona and Pele but it's clear for all to see just how amazingly good they were. So for Messi to even be considered as good or better than them just tells you how highly regarded he is amongst the football world. I reckon he will eventually be thought of as the greatest ever by a majority.

Its a sad day when people are so arrogant as to put the Champions League ahead of the World Cup, effectively ruling out the rest of the world. And we call the yanks arrogant!!!

I think it is also telling that Spain have been both World and European Champions in the time that Messi has been in his pomp. With several of his team mates key in this.
