I have a HP pavillion now. Should say had.

Bought it in 2013 for £600 and the odd hiccup here and there. Hated the touchscreen.

I've had two hp laptops both continually gave/give me problems. the battery * up and have a short life had two in a year, cd drive issues, had to get a cd to re-start the thing from scratch, my mate warned me about hp's but i didn't listen, some people will have no problems but i would say stay away, the pavillion is dog *.

In a laptop for what your gonna use it for in uni naa fan noise wouldn't be an issue for me in that situation, tho I do have a pet hate for fan noise in a HTPC machine (Home Theatre) that runs my TV, or a IDS system in a bedroom cupboard, however in this case I don't think it should be too much of an issue.

Yeah that's not too good at all i'm sorry to say, I know Hp's have had thier issues in the past, however I had presumed they were a bit better than that these days, for what he was wanna do with it tho i figured it would do the job fine without spending silly amounts of money on a much higher spec'd unit.
If I persoanlly were gonna buy a laptop these days I'd go for an Acer or better yet a dell, dells are extremely reliable and so easy to upgrade.

Yep not too shabby at all great graphics, 15.6" screen, ssd and 1tb hard drive, nice all depends how he feels about an AMD cpu over an Intel I guess.
But it is a good machine.

PC specialist use rebranded CLEVO barebones laptops, the components are fine but the chassis and screen are VERY cheap and flimsy. I had one ages ago and the thing literally fell apart. It came to the point the hinges broke (very easily) and the screen stopped working. I had to put in a new screen myself.

You get what you pay for and if it's cheap there's always a compromise somewhere. With CLEVO, it's speakers (sound is meh), keyboard, fans (the temperature will get hot) etc...
