I was referring to his domestic performances (you know, in the La Liga/Spanish football thread...). However even taking account of his CL performances, he has the lowest shot conversion rate in Europe. Hardly a Ballon D’or worthy statistic.

Yeah, did not look like the curse was going to be lifted

I cringed when I saw the starting XI and am so sick of the 4-4-2 but perhaps the opponent, conditions and history suggested to Valverde to literally just soak it up for a half and then pounce in the 2nd. Still think it was risky as La Real could've had Barcelona down by more than a deuce early but great stuff ultimately. Both goals from Suarez were really fantastic but the first was reminiscent of an Samuel Eto'O's goal years ago, first time touch at pace to curl it in from a angle you didn't think he would ever attempt - just as cool on it as Samu was years back. He's a phenomenal striker, to think he was already being written off a couple of months ago - football

Vermaelen staying healthy and integrated into the squad has certainly made a difference with Umtiti injured. Still to really integrate their two biggest signings ever in Coutinho & Dembélé. Mina too who actually is the biggest signing ever for Barcelona at 1.95m

Leo's fk, well I am fairly certain I will never enjoy the game as much when he eventually retires

Messi is quite hot and cold here, looked well up for it with bursts of speed but Betis are a hard nut to crack.
You can tell it's bad when busquets shoots twice from outside the box.
Feels like a nil nil but both teams capable.
Just want to see a moment of magic from the wee man.

How does Messi get that much power without shaping for it, it's wild.

Wow, what a pass and finish.

Unbelievable, that was literally a stroll in the park, how is it possible to make it look so simple :notworthy

:56: Oh man that was just ridiculous.

Oh dear, feel a bit sorry for Betis, they were doing so well but they've been humbled by pure class.

I can't help saying it every game but it's not even so much he's from another planet, it's that he always does something jaw dropping, plus he makes it look so subtle at times, like that 4th goal had me in stitches. How many times has he ran along the 18 yard line with defenders all lined up just to casually place it with pure precision. Mind boggling consistency.

He makes the hairs on my arms stand on end watching him. No other non-Celtic player has ever done that.

As far as levels are concerned no one comes close to his genius. The GOAT.

For me this is what seperates him from everyone else, yes the likes of Ronaldo has an incredible goal scoring record as well, but in terms of delivering mind blowing performances, Messi does it almost weekly, the range of passing, the footballing brain to see things others don't, the ability to ghost past a player with ease, free kick expert, it all adds up to the genius that is Lionel Messi. :yeah:
