Can't recall many negative articles about Fat Frank in the media, but then I can't recall many negative articles about any of England's "top" players, save for the moral outrage reserved for when a player has a drink or shags someone other than his partner.

Not by the press he's not, a scouser with Irish roots however is always going to be a target by Dail Mail & Sun

The Mail was hanging out of his * after Euro 2004. There was even a headline describing him as Pele II, for his performance against that well-known international powerhouse, Croatia.

Then there was the complete non-response from the media when he got sent off for a petulant stamp against Portugal in 2006 whereas Beckham was vilified for doing the same against Argentina in 98.

Think he got a free pass due to Ronaldo winking at him in the aftermath.

That's to sell papers, the Beckham story was huge in England he even got death threats by West Ham fans for some reason as was the stupidity of it all.

I don't think you can score 249 * goals for a club and not be a legend for said club.

Interesting, this was a discussed on 5 Live the other day. Everyone agreed he was, then it was taken a step further and asked if he would make it into the ultimate/legends team from the clubs history. It was a unanimous "no" on that.

The term World Class gets banded about with Rooney as well. I'm not convinced that he was/is.

For me he was International class, i never really thought of him as a truly World class player.

That's not really relevant, though. Steve Bruce was never world class, nor international class, whatever that means (never won an England cap), but most United fans would call him a club legend.

I never said it was relevant, just my opinion on him as a player in general :50:

There was a couple seasons around the Ronaldo/Tevez era, and then another around 2011 when he won player of the year in England, where I would say he was definitely world class.

But he's far too inconsistent. He'd have games or moments in games the rest of the time when you could see he clearly had lots of ability but just never produced it enough for me to go down as one of the best players in his generation. So many awful games as well.

I know England are * but the last time he played well in a tournament was the group stages of Euro 2004.

He might go down as a United legend but there's been a fair few England and Utd players who were better in my lifetime, let alone before that.
