He's just turned 31. Carrick is a regular at 35, Giggs was a regular feature up until he was 40, Scholes came back and played until he was 39.

I'm not saying he will but Mourinho has already stated he is wanted and can play at United for many years to come.

Has there ever been a top goal scorer at any Club in history that isn't classed as a legend?

I'd be amazed if there was.

He could play for Man U for years, but he won't.

He has dramatically dropped in quality as a forward, and he isn't clever nor gifted enough to be a midfielder.

He will probably be gone after this season, imo.

The problem with those comparisons is that none of those three were/are judged in terms of their goals, I just can't see United holding back the likes of Rashford and Martial for the sake of an ageing Rooney whose all round play doesn't really justify a starting spot, and whose goals are fast drying up.

He's on pace for 2 league goals this season, that's not really sustainable for four more years.

His early career he was hyped up to * by the press. As they do every year with a new English talent.

249 goals over a 13 year period. To be honest, I would expect better.

Icon, most definetly, but (and I will admit to being very biased), I would be embaressed if I called him a legend (if I was a United fan). Think he gets by on old headlines more often than not and the way he ripped them for his wage (multiple times) is a disgrace to be fair.

That's not what his Manager is saying in todays Press but regardless a trip back to Everton will keep him in the Premiership and still on course for the record.

He'd be there or thereabouts IMO.

What Mourinho says and what he does may be two different things altogether.

That previous comment was purely my opinion, but yes I agree with you, he'll probably be in America, or back at Everton.

He's playing him in almost every game, actions speak louder than words like you say.

Must be for shop window purposes then - he's contributed next to * all this season.

One look at his stats is all the shop window Rooney would need. He'll have his pick of numerous clubs!

Might actually be beneficial for him to leave because, for me, he is still a genuine class footballer. Even if he's played at centre mid.

Is the guy who is about to be the club's highest ever goalscorer a club legend? :56:

It's like asking if Jimmy Bell is a vile wee Hun * or not.

I dunno about not being good enough to play midfield. I always saw that position as the one he would end up in.

Rooney is a clever player IMO even if he may not be as clever off the park. Always been a great passer of the ball with a good work ethic and dangerous from in and outside the box.

As you say though he seems to have peaked way too early.

Would United fans count him as a legend? I know there are a large selection of United fans that hate him for the way he "treated" the club over money and contracts

Anytime I've seen him in midfield with Manure or Engurland he has been absolutely *.

Tries the Hollywood pass constantly and doesn't have the tactical intelligence to sit and know when to go..

When he was a striker and just off, he looked tailor made for a midfield role, but nah. The day's when he had a burst and would chase back to left and right back would've worked in midfield.... But he's nothing like a sitting Carrick...which he's almost trying to be now..

I'd say he was a legend to Sevconians.

To break Shearer's record he'll need 67 league goals. He's scored 50 in his last 5 seasons put together, so he'd need to significantly increase his scoring rate or play to 38-40 to have a chance.

If he managed to get his league goals up to the 12 it was at a couple of seasons ago he'd need to play nearly 6 seasons as a starter. If he could manage to put up last season's figure of 8 consistently he'd have to plough on for nearly 9 seasons to get there. I don't think it's anywhere near a sure thing that he'll be in the 220+ ballpark, tbh, let alone 260. He hasn't scored 20+ league goals since 11/12.

It comes down to whether you think he's capable of scoring 16 goals a season for the next 4 seasons.

I know for a fact he is but he may not do it. Hence 'there or thereabouts'. Twice.
