That Depeche Mode when we score!!
I remember back in 1988 at the British Masters at the last par 5 on the final round good old Sandy took a sand wedge on his 2nd shot and he went on to win the title adding to the much bigger namesake,Peter Alliss sais "Sandy has just an outrageously long drive!"

Big hitter, but not any bigger than the freaks that are McIlroy or Woods!

Jack Nicklaus drove the ball enormously in his time.

Sandy hit a big ball, as did Seve (when he hit it straight), as did Tom Watson and Norman. Woosnam too.

Its just the equipment that makes the modern guy look bigger off the tee.

Sandy Lyle rarely went all out he was so powerful,he could hit the one iron further than many with their drivers! He could also outhit just about anyone with a 3 wood, but like you rightly say its totally different equipment today.

Mind Sam Torrance saying in his book he seen Sandy Lyle hit a one iron in a huge Cross wind at the range and you could throw a blanket over them his grouping was that close.

Ben Hogan used to hit a driver 250 yards back in the 50s, and could place his ball pretty much anywhere he wanted. I think he would be winning all sorts nowadays.
