SPFL bosses last night promised to fight a Home Office plan which could see England’s FA decide how many foreign stars can play in Scotland after Brexit.

Hampden chief Ian Blair has warned that stricter controls on incoming stars could adversely hit the recruitment plans of Scotland’s top clubs.

SPFL secretary Blair spoke out amid fears that the Home Office wants the FA to decide post-Brexit transfer policy for the four home nations.

It’s believed they could attempt to tighten current rules in order to allow more home-grown players to get into English Premier League squads.

Blair said: “It’s not a message we would want to support in any way, shape or form.

"The FA does not represent Scottish football. We have a good working relationship with our English colleagues but it’s not one which would allow one association to impose its will on the other.

“We believe that the system which we have currently have works well for Scottish football and its clubs because it allows them to bring in players from overseas who might not meet what is, effectively, an arbitrary barrier and a pretty high bar.

"However, they still have to convince our panel that those players would make a positive contribution to our game and I believe that Ryotaro Meshino is a good example of that.
“Stilian Petrov would not have qualified when Celtic signed him from CSKA Sofia 20 years ago and I don’t think that anyone could argue he did anything other than make a significant impact on Scottish football.

“Indeed, the success that Celtic and Rangers enjoyed in 2003 and 2008 and are currently enjoying again was and is helped by having a sizeable amount of players from abroad. If we want to see our club game flourish then we need to be very careful what we do in this area.”
The home countries have held various meetings to debate the controversial Home Office proposal and they were brought into an SFA board meeting by conference call yesterday.
Meanwhile, PFA chief executive Fraser Wishart admits that the union is in the dark when members come to them for advice on what might happen to them post-Brexit.
He said: “We’ve had players who are coming out of contract asking us what will happen if they accept an offer to play abroad and we can’t tell them.

“There are also foreign players here whose deals expire at the end of the current season and they’ve asked whether they would be allowed to re-sign for their current club or join another Scottish club and we can’t answer that either as it stands.
“I’ve spoken to my colleagues in England and they’re also in the dark.”

English FA should not have sole control over this and pretty disgusting if they do. They will set high bars for players as the big clubs in England generally have international experience.
England itself will never cap foreign players, Liverpool had 2 English players in their starting xi in last year's final.
