I’ll start off with probably the most controversial one.

Original Ronaldo, done it all except win the Champions League (which is a * shame as well) briefly the top ever scorer at a World Cup until Klose took over.

The guy had everything, would have been a challenger for the greatest ever if not for two injuries that would have ended the careers of lesser players IMO.

    14 Club Trophies
    2 World Cups in 94 and 2002
    2 Copa America’s
    1 Confederation Cup

66 Personal Accolades/Awards to his name, including 3 World Player of the Year awards and 2 Balón d’Or’s

There’s still a major ‘what if?’ And a lingering disappointment over those injuries and what could have been for the most explosive footballer I’ve ever witnessed.

    Anybody got any other ones?

    Kaka

The last player to win the Ballon d'Or before Messi and Ronaldo took over. At Milan, the first time around, he was on another planet. Had the speed, power, touch, skill and scored a fair number of goals. One of the most enjoyable players to watch this century.

But he left for Real Madrid when he was 27 and although he did have some success there, he was never really the same player. A couple of bad injuries obviously played their part. Went back to Milan for a year then played his last few seasons in the US.

    Shearer?

Great career for him personally, but he would've won basically everything he possibly could have if he'd signed for Man Utd.

Ten trophyless years at the same club seems a wee bit underwhelming for anyone.

Aye that’s a good one, he would also be better remembered globally. He didn’t really ever have a good crack at Champions League football. He’s loved in England but in World Football he’s not really the name of somebody like Wayne Rooney because of that.

Ronaldinho, yes he was special and totally unplayable when at Barca, but the rest of his career was a bit beige.

I was 100% sure he was the better signing between him and Cristiano Ronaldo. Seems funny saying that now, guy was unreal, Milan knew they put his body through the ringer though. Played through too many injuries to squeeze everything possible out of the last truly great Milan side.

Nah, as much of a * as I find Shearer I can’t criticise a guy staying at his hometown club giving his all for it despite there being other options that may make more sense career wise.

I’d be a hypocrit, reason I * love Paul McStay or Danny McGrain.

Aye that maybe true, but he would’ve had a far better career and won the lot basically. I do get what you’re saying though and have a bit of admiration for Shearer even though he is a * tbh.

    Matt Le Tissier

Would have liked to have seen what he would have done at a top club.

    Had some peg on him.

Definitely mate, it’s easy for us to look on and hope that for a footballing perspective but really, it’s something I admire.

It’s like, Henrik could have moved before he did and had a far more succesfull career, look what he did when he was past his peak man. I love him all the more for that.

As much of a genius of a footballer he was, I suspect he was too lazy to make it at a massive club. Just one of those complete * mavericks.

Michael Owen. Was unbelievable with Liverpool when he first broke through for a few years. Won a UEFA Cup and a Balon D'or to his name, but left Liverpool the year before they won the Champions League and was part of that constantly under-performing England national team. Ended up with a Premier League medal at Man United, but that one league medal he has, he just about squeezed enough appearances to get one. Trophyless season at Real Madrid.

Great player who peaked young and got ruined by injuries.

Aye, one of those guys who probably played too much football, too young and he was * by the time he was 26. His instinct never left him but, left with a lot of what if’s there as well. That’s a belter.

    I’ve another - Cesc Fabregas.

When he was originally at Arsenal as a youngster he looked like he could go on to become one of the true greats at a very young age. He moved to Barca and looked to kick on, since after his first season there he’s just stifled a bit, a bit of an also ran while still being a fantastic footballer. Never hit the heights everyone thought he would, despite that, he has had an incredible career.

Over 100 Spanish caps, * look at his honours: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cesc_Fàbregas

He’s just never hit the heights expected I don’t think.

There used to be loads of players like that kicking about, geniuses at provincial clubs. Seems to have been coached out the game now though.

Even up here we had the likes of Latapy at Falkirk, Chic Charnley for... Well everycunt :56: not near the same level but they were about.

Likes of Jay Jay Okocha at Bolton, Di Canio at Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham, Kincladze at Man City...

Rivaldo aswell for me, he was at Barca when they were really struggling. He has won the World Cup and Champions League and was really something else but could’ve been way better imo.

That’s one I’ve never really thought of, I’ll need to give it a bit more thought :56:

Should have topped it off with a Celtic trial, that would really complete his career
