His save against Brazil is seriously overrated. Good keeper, though.

    RIP. :shamrock:

    81 ?
Makes you think though. Here's a guy who has been fit his whole life and snuffs it at 81, and here's me who basically thinks that walking down to the Chinese for my Saturday carry oot rather than ordering a delivery consetutes as a serious work out.....
Wit chance have I got ?
    But...

I used to say that and believe it in my younger years. Admittedly purely through bias. The reaction to get across and judge with the speed of the ball and then to put it over the bar. Probably 60% talent, 40% luck.(Which every keeper needs) It was world class. Also humble about it and would play it down.
    RIP

A good bit before my time but a world class keeper no doubt. R.I.P

Great save, of course. Just swear I’ve seen De Gea do it about 5 times a season :giggle1:

You could be right about the bias.

The ball doesn't weigh about four stone now though!

Didn't like him or Blair tbh.

Sorry for his family all the same, I'm sure it's * for them.

    RIP.

Nope but does mean the ball doesn't travel as fast.

Definitely agree with you mate. We were talking about this in work when the news broke that Gordon passed away.
Naturally youtube comes out to rewatch the play and save...

Absolutely overrated. The whole thing looked like a panic and scramble. And to agree with you again, De Gea has pulled over similar / better saves this season alone!

Its probably nostalgia that people refer to Banks' save. In modern context, not a chance.

    RIP :shamrock:

At that time he was world class in many experts / pundits & players eyes, including team mates & opponents alike.
You don’t take world class status away from someone through time passing.
Arguably there maybe better goalkeepers in relative terms today than he was, that doesn’t alter his stature.
I think he was world class.

Greatest save ever? My * it was! Same old same old - perpetuate the myth over and over again and eventually it becomes 'fact'. It was no better than Oor Gordons save against Bolton (when he played for Sunderland).

Anyway - RIP. Seemed like a decent enough spud!

Barking up the wrong tree dude. I'm simply referring to the save vs Pele - which was vastly overrated imo.

Way too young to be able to judge his career.

Yeah, but Sunderland vs Bolton isn't exactly England- Brazil at the World Cup. Part of the reason the save is so memorable is the context of the game. England were defending champions, Brazil were on their way to being the greatest ever international side. Throw in the lack of televised football and seeing Banks make a brilliant save from the best footballer in the world and you have a memorable thing. That game was thirteen years before I was born, I would be pretty certain I could name all 22 starters.
From a purely technical perspective, Gordon's save may have been better than Banks', there may be better technical saves every week now, but the occasion is always relevant to such things, especially as they do take on a certain amount of legend over time and, let's be honest here, all football fans like legend and nostalgia. That's the bedrock that makes our game great, no matter how much Sky and the likes want to whitewash it.
