He’s gonna have a job on pushing Boyata and Ajer out the side - personally I think both lads deserve to forge a partnership in a two centre half setup right now

If we play a three centre half thing anytime soon we’ll see him

 

When the European matches start again then we will need to start swapping the sides. It gives us the option of resting players against lower sides. It gives plenty of options with Benkovic, Ajer, Boyata and Hendry able to play in a back 4 and Lustig and Tierney able to play in a back 3 when it comes to resting or dealing with injuries or suspensions.

Think Benkovic already looks like a more assured character than fellow Crota Jozo. Even though he's young, he has a nice self-confidence and swagger. Bit like...dare I say it...a former big bad man who is a current transfer record holder? Not even suggesting he's in the mould of VVD, but it won't hurt our backline to have another vocal leader in there, regardless of his age.

And where I'm thinking of 2for1 is Jozo - I think the guy, as hard as he is, is a wee bit shy sometimes. He seems a bit quiet, soft almost - even though he's the frame of hun-skelpin' perfection. Anyway, perhaps having a former teammate and fellow countryman beside him will help bring Jozo on too. He's been our best defender at times but seems to go into his shell too often. Perhaps Benkovic will act as a good wingman for him, give him a little more confidence, if nothing else it should be nice having someone he can talk to in his own language. That alone could help aid the formation of a good partnership.

An in-form Jozo, added to the pool of Ajer, Benkovic and Boyata, leaves us with 4 formidable CBs, with Hendy as domestic cover. Certainly bodes well for Europe is we aim to have 3 at the back. Potentially gives us 6 to choose from (if Lustig is included too) rather than scraping to find 3. Good competition. (Would be great if that competition didn't include 2 player possibly able to flee in January, but to heck with it, for the next 4 months at least the backline is looking alright!)
