The proposal was for the top two to go through meaning that the maximum number of games for any team is not going to differ from the current set-up.

The motivation behind this is more money and no doubt the sponsors want it. As a spectacle it will mean more dross and the competition will be more drawn out and less entertaining. How greedy does football need to get?

I like the idea it means more games and a chance for nations that don't really have much hope qualifying like Tonga, Mongolia and Scotland.

Rubbish idea. Dilutes the quality of the football just to make more money for FIFA.

That would be some group and with 2 qualifying Scotland might have a chance. The sponsors would be delighted at the mass appeal of those fixtures.

Don't get me wrong I liked the new Euros set up so not against change.

16 Groups of 3 teams is bananas though.

A group of 3 teams is just utterly bizarre. 12 groups of 4 would make more sense, and even 12 groups is far too much.

3 in a group is a bit odd I'm all for adding teams but on the old basis which worked;4 in group with two progressing to the knock out stage.

The structure of the tournament has really got nothing to do with the quality of the games.

Was gonna say the same, the Euros change was decent but this sounds a bit all over the shop.

Think a group stage should always have four teams minimum.

Yeah, nah. If OFC even gets a guaranteed tournament spot it sure as * won't ever be going to Tonga, unless NZ gets wiped off the face of the planet. I'd wager they'll leave it as it is with a half spot, there are no nations with any political clout worth bothering about from a FIFA perspective, It's the ginger-headed stepchild of the confederations. Give OFC a spot and you're basically just giving NZ a free path to every World Cup without having to engage in a credible qualification process.

Really looking forward to the South American qualifiers now, they were always plagued by that problem of teams having to compete to get through, now they'll virtually all get a spot unless they somehow manage to finish say 9th or 10th. I'm sure the quality will increase massively as the stakes have decreased massively... said no one ever.

    Infantino is a baldy *.

Looking back on 2014 there were 9 group stage draws. Prepare for a cuntload of penalty shoot outs.

    Genius.

Now a team could play for a draw for 90 minutes in the hope of getting to a penalty shoot out, where they can subsequently 'beat', say, France or Spain. Previously a team doing so would only get a share of the spoils, now they can actually use the same strategy to get a 50-50 shot at 'winning' the match.

I wonder if the penalty win will simply count towards tie breaking at the end of the group phase, or will be the equivalent of a bona fide 3-point win with the loser getting * all.

They lost 22-0 to Australia just over a decade ago, think even the Scots would be able to cope with em.

Australia went on to beat American Samoa a couple of days later, the score being 31-0.
