I know it is easy to take the * but it is quite easy to train your tastebuds to pick up the different levels of taste in whiskies. It does make you a bit of a snob though when you learn to appreciate the good stuff - you will never even sniff a Famous Grouse again.

Best whiskey I have is a 1967 John Scotts Highland Park. Best cheap whiskly out there by quite a bit is Black Bottle in my opinion. Beats most whiskies triple its price.

Absolutely love the Islay malts, can't beat the peat!

Alas, a student budget doesn't allow for the drinking of fine malts and I refuse to sully the whiskey experience by drinking blends or that bourbon muck so no whiskey for me at the moment!

I agree with you on BB being the best cheap whisky, but no way does it beat most whiskies 3 x it's price.

I'm still loving Old Pultney, can usually get a bottle for about £20 - which is great for a good drinking single malt IMO.

    Grouse???
    Bells???
    Teachers???

Where's the rougher-than-a-badgers-* smiley when you need one! :D I thought it was just alkies that drank that * these days!?

If you MUST drink a blend, then go for something like Haigs Dimple (not chea a £35, but you WILL taste the difference!).

Otherwise, get yersel some decent malts. A boggo 10 year old Macallan or a 12 year old Glenlivet is as good as it gets around the £25 mark. Highland Park if you want to spend a little more.

If you're feeling flush though and want to taste something truly spectacular, then hunt down a bottle of Lagavulin (£45)... you will never have a more complex tasting liquid in your gob than that (*insert your own gag here*).

Lagavulin is wonderful, but out of my price range. It costs about $80 here. The most expensive whisky I have ever purchased for myself is Ardbeg, which I bought for mysellf for my birthday.

Dunno if Southern Comfort counts 'cause it's only whiskey-based, but I love it with cola.

Anyone else tried Caol Ila, actually? Only came across it about a year ago.
