Portuguese reports linking Celtic with a move for 22-year-old Belenenses midfielder Fabio Sturgeon have been dismissed by the Premiership leaders.

It seems that Fabio Sturgeon’s move to Celtic is growing in the Portuguese media, despite denials from Celtic to their local media.

On Wednesday, Portuguese newspaper Record claimed Brendan Rodgers’ club had opened talks for the midfielder, and Belenenses would start negotiating from €800k.

Now according to the same outlet, Celtic have made an official bid of exactly €800k, and the transfer seems pretty close.

    I'm not sure at all.

Rated highly when he was younger but his return is poor, even though he is playing at an average side.

However, at £600k? * it I suppose. If true.

Here's a bit about sturgeon from a Belenenses team report just before Christmas:

"The 22-year-old Sturgeon, who was in the Portuguese Olympic squad, took a bit of time to get going but is now having one of his most consistent seasons to date. Able to play on both wings and even behind the striker, he’s the main creative source for Belenenses’s front line. He leads the team in dribbles, has over one key pass per match and apart from the striker Camara, no-one in the team shoots more often than him. Braga’s reported interest is, therefore, all but unexpected."

The fact he can play in all 3 positions behind the striker tells you straight away why Rodgers would perhaps want him.

Not only would he be getting competition for Rogic, but if one of the wide men were off form or injured, he could easily step in.

Important to have that versatility within certain players and I think Rodgers is trying to build a squad full of versatile guys. Kouassi is another one. Can play pretty much anywhere in the midfield apparently.

Alex OHenley replied to a tweet saying this player mightn't necessarily be our main transfer target.

He has been watched by Celtic, three times all since BR joined.

Attacking midfielder (across the line) and centre half are the two positions discussed today. Expect at least one of these in next few days to start progressing with the Sunday/Monday papers to start catching up on the name(s) and jumping about with thier 'exclusive' headlines.

As above, also 3 players being touted for loan as BR insisting on smaller group at 1st team training. Those being moved out on loan were told yesterday that they will be loaned to try and catch BR eye as they are unlikely to feature in 1st team between now and end of season.

4 players have also been sat down and advised they should instruct agent to get permanent move by end of Jan transfer, as simply no future at club and best featuring for team, if not they will not take part in all the daily sessions (whether they sit tight if not getting the same money elsewhere will soon be see).

Big big push by BR to get team ready for Euro and he wants majority of players in over next 10 days but equally important (if not more) players above away from the daily training as quality of session being impacted by sheer volume impacting sessions being delivered.

3 players out on loan - I'd guess Ajer, Henderson and maybe Christie.

4 players he wants sold - Ambrose, Boyata, Ciftci and Commons.

In terms of this guy, I'm not too impressed really. Doesn't strike me as someone who would come in and improve the team.

Almost DH, a couple wrong but I won't go into that on main forum.

My own personal view is similar on this guy as yours, he'd come in when 1-2 aren't able to play/off form and I'd prefer player to come in and really push into 1st team almost immediately. I should highlight that the trips to view him were from the view that Roberts would be away in May. Certainly wouldnt see this new signing AND Roberts in squad start of next season and City could be pushed to allow us to retain Roberts for one more season (comes at a slight cost.....not just financially).
