I see there’s Wild Rover and Dirty Old Town on there. Where these frequently sang in the jungle?

Yep. Thats exactly true. The whole Bhoys against Bigotry campaign outlawed the old rebs that used to be belted out of the jungle every game bar none. Miss those days. Off to Dublin in the Green and Roamin in the Gloamin......just for no reason, like we could be playing Partick Thistle in the League Cup and the songsheet would be the same.

I remember they used to play some 'dubious' songs over the tannoy at old Celtic Park aswell back in the day.....before any of it was outlawed. Not proper pro-IRA songs but what would be classed as rebel songs nevertheless. The press would have a field day nowadays if anything close to that happened. You dont even get Paddy Reilly's Fields of Athenrye now over that tannoy. That was an absoloute belter before the Old Firm games

Wild Rover was always sang. Can't really recall D.O.T. But like now, we always had an extra large song book. So I'd imagine some merry soul got it going.

It’s a shame a lot of songs tend to just die out after a while, and with new generations of supporters. I remember reading about a few of the anthems we had back in the early days (early 20th century), it was interesting that there was nothing that still carries on today.

We should start a TC campaign to get resurrect a few of them!

The away support are very good when on form. Last couple of seasons I've heard stuff like Irish soldier laddie. Roamin. All off to Dublin. Even the likes of Jimmy Johnston. Our hardcore are well tuned in.:50:

Yeah, I must admit, the past few seasons I’ve heard a load of old chants being resurrected. I’m not much of a fan of RITG as find it cringey as * mind haha!

Through the 90s and early 2000s Fields of Athenrye was probably our biggest anthem. You barely ever hear it now. And it didnt have any rebel lyrics in it either so there's no reason why the board should have 'ushered' it out. T

That Glen Daly though.....oaft. Great that he recorded a couple of our most famous songs like The Johnny Thompson Song and For Its a Grand Old Team....but he was actually a singer in the 50's/60's, folk actually paid to go in and see him. I imagine his voice signing anything else other than Celtic songs would have sounded absolute murder!!

Yeah, must admit you don’t tend to hear The Fields much anymore, which is a shame given how beautiful a song it is.

Anyone else know any songs that aren’t sung anymore?

Not saying it was down to the board or whether they took any notice of it but from memory the objections to "Fields" being sung was around the line "against the famine and the crown I rebelled..."

I think Grace has kind of replaced the Fields, maybe not officially (I've never heard it being played at Parkhead) but by the fans. It is certainly heard much more often than any other ballad I can think of. I have no problem with that BTW, Grace is a great song.

Didn't Gerry McNee say it was "sectarian" and had to be removed from the Scottish game.

Can recall him on Setanta a number of years ago when they had a Scottish football discussion programme and I'm sure he made those comments. Calling it "Irish nonsense" or something like that.

Quite possibly mate I don't remember any direct quotes from him but I do remember some folk wanted it banned as it was an "IRA Song".

It was brilliant at Parkhead before the Old Firm games when they used to play the Paddy Reilly version over the tannoy. Brings back memories of the Tommy Burns' seasons...when we we were dead up against it. Everyone was against us, the SFA....the referees....every other team in Scotland...(not much has changed lol). We had this Gung Ho mentality. That was Tommy's tactics....just throw everything at them for 90 mins. The passion in the crowd was incredible in those days, we weren't spoiled with success you see.

Belting out that Paddy Reilly version of Fields of Athenrye in the pishing rain before the teams came out at an Old Firm game. That got the blood pumping. It seemed that everyone sang louder in those days.

Nostalgia....I suppose thats how it works, everything seems better in the old days lol

For some reason the game I associate it with ( on the TV) was the 3-3 at Ibrox.

Love that Pierre goal ( Andy Thom one wasn't bad either. Look away Tom Boyd though :40:)
