Looks likely that Parliament will have a vote on whether British airstrikes against ISIS should be extended to Syria (the RAF are already bombing ISIS in Iraq), this week.

Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters oppose airstrikes but many Labour MPs support the government's position. Due to this pressure Corbyn has agreed to have a free vote on the issue.

The majority of the British public support airstrikes (https://yougov.co.uk/news/2015/11/25/strong-and-continued-support-raf-air-strikes-syria/)

Boots on the ground would be better.

I clicked yes, but more for the fact that we should be actively doing something, maybe not air strikes. They are safer from our point of view, but we need to be 100% sure what/who we are hitting. Which we can't be.

Do you think Western troops on the ground would prevent more civilian casualties? I'd say the opposite tbh.

No. It's an utter fallacy and will achieve nothing.

Afghanistan and Iraq have surely taught us that.

Keep bombing them and all it achieves is it spawns the next generation of disaffected Muslims who absolutely despise us.

Stop funding them and cut off the Arab "allies" who fund them.

Definitely agree with this. Problem is, I don't think any Western leader has the courage to call out countries like Saudi for what they are, too many vested interests.

It's not. He wasn't saying people in Syria would despise us because most of them are Muslims but because we keep either bombing the * out of the mostly Muslim people of strategic parts of the Middle East or funding/training/arming the people (Muslim or otherwise) who are killing them.

The money spent renewing trident and funding the military should be used actively seeking out alternative renewable energy sources, then maybe we wouldn't be so reliant on questionable governments who we are quite happy to turn a blind eye to their human rights violations and their funding of groups who wish to see the west wiped off the map.

The sad thing is, I think we are well past the point of that ever happening. If that point was ever even there to begin with.

What will 'show them' in your opinion? I'm genuinely interested in reading others point of view btw, I've read a lot about this conflict in the past few months and I can't see any other solution which doesn't include military force as a viable way of defeating ISIS.

Airstrikes alone won't solve the problem but they do help our allies on the ground like the Kurdish Peshmerga/YPJ. They recently recaptured Sinjar with help from the USAF.
