I get that Granpa (from the North) hate's Da (from the South) - both Catholics - principally because he married his daughter, but I'm not getting the digs specifically about Da coming from the South.

Can any of my Irish cousins explain what's going on with that - if there's anything going on at all?

Is that all there is to it? Is Granpa critical of the South and Da's Southernness just because that's where he comes from? i.e. would Granpa similarly moan about Scotland and being Scottish had Da's character come from Glasgow instead?

I just wondered if there was something more to it than that?

I'm assuming he means because the south allowed Ireland to be partitioned and abandoned the northern Catholics. Chronologically baring in mind the guys age I don't think this is entirely fair mind.

Not really. People cross over and back the border daily to shop, eat, drink/socialise, work etc. Derry itself is virtually on the border. You could do the same animosity if it was set in Dublin and the father was from Cork

Cheers. That was what I wondered too - just didn't know if I was reading too much into the North / South remarks.

I just mean mate that although I am not sure how old the younger fella is meant to be: to blame somebody from the south who was born in maybe the 50's for things that happened in the 1920's makes little sense.

Maybe the granda's animosity isn't based on this we would have to ask the writer anyway.

    Ok

I wondered maybe did you mean it was unfair due to the fact that a civil war was fought over the acceptance of partition. This however would make grandad to old.

In the 50s you would have many from the south who took part in the border campaign.

In the 70s there was also widespread support in the 26 counties for the plight of the nationalist in the north of the country evident by the burning of the british embassy.

Even in the 80s there was widespread support for the republican cause in Dublin. It seems to be from here on in that the west brit media started to demonise the cause and turn many in the 26 counties against supporting the struggle.

Given that Derry girls was set in the 90s it is unlikely that the animosity has anything to do with being a sellout and more to do with him being not good enough for his daughter. Digs at where he is from is probably similar to Alf Garnett and the scouse git

I don't really understand the point you are trying to make. Are you saying you have never heard folk from the north talk about folk from the south as like this ? I have even seen it on here. Whether you or me think it is correct or not is neither here nor there really.

I get you. But we are taking about a grandfather from the 1990s.

It just my experience from having worked alongside guys from Derry city and county Derry at that time. You would sometimes get your "free state *" this and your "northern *" that but most of the time it's either joking or 2 guys who just didn't get along. Nowadays the divide seems to have grown due to the apathy and often dislike some in the 26 have for those in the 6 counties. However along the border you don't really get this.

I get where your coming from. People in Belfast find there is a certain type of Southern person who see the troubles as nothing to do with them and that people from the north, particularly Belfast and Derry, are troublemakers. In return people from the north see this type as sellouts and where the term West Brit comes from. Also in the Rebs song “Take it down from the mast Irish traitor”...
