Hes away imo. No new contract, free to leave in 6 months, getting reviews at the world cup and were playing comper in friendlies and these friendlies are getting full strength squads to get ready for the qaulifiers.

    Hes gone.

Pretty sure it was 2010, the last club he had played for at that point was us.

He’s done well for Belgium, including the pre-World Cup games. So he’s proven people wrong and showed that he isn’t actually a useless defender like many have claimed in this thread. No-one said he doesn’t still have limitations though. He’ll never be a technical ball playing defender and will still make mistakes, as long as Rodgers gets him to keep it simple, he’s more than good enough for us.

That's the key with Boyata really, when he keeps it simple he's strong in the air, good in the tackle and athletic enough to keep up with the fastest of strikers.

It's when he starts to think he's a footballer that things inevitably go wrong eg. Gifting Windass a goal with his suicidal attempt at a nutmeg or Bayern a 2nd goal by letting the ball go over his head.

He is by no means useless. Which is the most frustrating thing when he continually makes these costly mistakes.

He certainly has the physicality to be a solid CB, it remains to be seen whether he has the mentaliity and focus to be one consistently for us.

Agreed. We should always be on the lookout to upgrade any positions and our defence is by far our weakest area, of which Boyata has been a part.

It's down to Rodgers to decide whether he sticks by Boyata in the hope he eradicates the mistakes or looks to sign someone else. If he decides to continue with him and the mistakes continue then he'll need to be accountable for that.

I'm starting to think that I don't understand football. I spend all season watching a centre back perform like a carthorse, and make numerous schoolboy errors, then he goes to the World Cup and turns into the reincarnation of Franco Baresi.

Having said that, I've just watched Jordan Henderson playing for England, so maybe this whole tournament is a spoof, and someone is about to pull back the curtain and explain how it's just been a scripted comedy pilot for a new tv show.

I've no been able to watch any of the belgium games but they have only played against tunisia and panama in a back 3 with 2 superior defenders next to him. The england game will be a good test of where he is at.

I hope so, but BR defied reason many times to keep him in the team. At some point I was worried that if he got suspended, Brendan would play him anyway and take the points deduction

Being part of the Belgium team is not going to make me think he is a must stay defender. When you are surrounded by good players it does not make you a great player, but it can hide your weaknesses. He's good enough to play in good teams but I think his weaknesses means he has to be around some really top class talent to cover him. Belgium will have England next and then Japan, Senegal or Columbia afterwards which is different to Panama and Tunisia.
I mean Bruno Alves was part of the squad that won the Euros and is in the Portugal squad, I still think he's *.

I agree, I’m just saying it’s almost the exact same convo.

And we’re still awaiting a 2012 like season from Boyata too boot.

Em pretty sure none of our players at the World Cup will be playing in these friendlies as they’ll be on an extended holiday

From the messages so far, is he in the last year of his contract? I thought we signed a new deal with him when Rodgers arrived, because he loved his attitude and work ethic?

Martinez must be directing Boyata to not try anything fancy, unlike Rodgers who thinks one can play out from the back with Boyata in there.
