Les claypool is off his rocker. Easily one of the most gifted musicians ever.
Heard him do master of puppets on the bass before and it was amazing and pretty funny

Maybe not better, but a really good effort.

Oh wow I thought I was the only one. It's almost blasphemy, feels a bit like you're criticising him and not his interpretation. I don't think anyone could cover it. That song needs far too much space so that Trent Reznor can put everything into it, like a ring of fire. :fear:

This is why I think Bruce Springsteen is a legend. Sting wrote a song in compound time using a cool guitar riff and Springsteen removed the guitar and took it right down country to rock n roll land where it was meant to be and turned it into a hymn. The look in his eyes and that fire and brimstone guitar solo, breathtaking. "Once a Catholic always a Catholic."

Did username Joe Strummer change it? Thought I'd post this in case he hasn't read it.

The Mortal Coil cover is hauntingly beautiful. Captures the spirit of the song. Nearly cried when I heard him doing it. Same with Jeff's Hallelujah which must be 2nd to Hendrix for best covers.

I did not know Elizabeth Fraser was in This Mortal Coil, an amazing voice. She was good friends with Jeff Buckley and recorded All Flowers In Time Bend Toward The Sun. She said she was writing the lyrics to Teardrop when she heard the news so there's a part of him there if not explicitly. It was a powerful enough song before I read that.

The Cocteau Twins, there's a band who can't be covered, stunning music. So bold and original.

Talking of twins, I can't believe how much Jeff Buckley looks like his dad and they both became musicians with incredible voices.

Jeff was especially gifted as he is one of the great guitar players.

I love his cover of Lilac Wine. It's a wonder of life that great artists can make melancholy a beautiful thing.

So true about the melancholy because Paul McCartney really nailed it with the frog song.

:56: The Frog of Kintyre is the inspiration behind Sgt Pepper, one lick and a brass band and choir they did hire and then they grew wings as they got higher and higher

Possibly controversial, but for me these are both better than the originals, better performed and much better produced... Purely coincidental that it's the same band.

    Really?

Literally both of those are just straight covers and B-sides at that. There is nothing substantially unique or special that makes them definitively different from the originals. The production is better, but that is 20+ years and has nothing to do with the musicianship, arrangement or performance. Respectfully mate, sorry, don't hear it.

To be fair, you got it head on in that both were b-sides to the singles at that point. I'm lucky enough to have good speakers at home and when I play both, they just rock so much better than the originals.

I kinda thought this would split opinions depends who picks it up, but no offence taken mate :60:

This one's a modern, retro sounding take on the Miami Vice soundtrack. Class!

No worries mate, and lol, of course none taken and likewise didn't mean to offend. :50: Music, like art, is completely subjective. I just personally tend to be more of the opinion if doing a cover, it should be to make it vital in it's own right and somehow unique; that it can sit beside the original and not be overshadowed or, worse still, dismissed as something you might here by a covers band in a pub on a Friday night.

Although, admittedly, that more often than not leads to bad cover versions, when it makes it better, you can't help but know and recognize it, and while can appreciate both. Think it is as much about acknowledging that the artist doing the cover has somehow made the song their own, and that is what the thread is all about. But this is just a personal opinion, far from being definitively right or wrong, just an opinion, lol.
