    I think when Chiellini hangs his boots up he will go down as one of the great Italian defenders. He's one of the classic no nonsense defenders that Italy specialise in producing. Reads the game superbly and is hardly ever caught out of position. He's not quite up there with Maldini or Baresi but he's certainly comparable with someone like Fabio Cannavaro who is thought of as a great.

    For me it's between Chiellini and Bonucci for the best in the world tag.

    Take yer pick. Used to think Godin was massively underrated but he's not as good as previous seasons.

    I can't disagree with any of that.

    Nesta was the best modern Italian CB, but Chiellini is comparable and if Juventus manage to win this competition he'll be right up there. Maldini, Fachetti, Baresi, Scirea, Nesta, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Bergomi, Gentile.... the Italians have been * spoiled with defenders over the decades, while we produce legends such as McManus, Caldwell and Lee Wilkie. :giggle1:

    I believe it's a cultural thing. The Italians take as much pride in keeping a clean sheet as other nations take in scoring a goal. It's a mentality. They are without doubt the masters of defending.
