Thats a lot but I do want him. Still, thats not pricey if you compare it to the realistic likely cost of some of the top European names being suggested on TC. Thats normally the minimum sort of money you need to shell out to buy a good in-contract player that English teams are also after. We really need a high energy midfielder. He would be great for us.

I Think hibs might sell him a litle bit less money than they wanted in january becuase they know he wants to leave.

If we can get him for 3.5 million I will be happy he has the best years ahead of him.

    CELTS LAND £4.4M BROWN
EXCLUSIVE Hibs star agrees 5-year deal worth £25k a week
By James Traynor And Keith Jackson

CELTIC last night won the race to sign Hibs midfield dynamo Scott Brown.

The transfer of the 21-year-old, the hottest property in Scottish football, will be confirmed today.

Hibs have accepted a £4.4million offer for the Scotland star who will earn a massive £25,000 a week on a five-year deal.

It's a dream move for a player paid just £2000 at Easter Road.

Celtic and Rangers have been linked with Brown all season but the Parkhead men stepped up their efforts after we revealed that prepared to pay as much as £5.5million to snare Scotland's hot test property.

At one stage yesterday Brown was on his way across the M8 to Glasgow after the Parkhead club had a massive £4.6m offer accepted by Petrie.

But mysteriously Petrie then withdrew permission for the player to meet with Lawwell.

It remains unclear whether Celtic's offer has been topped by a rival bidder, with Boro and Reading both in contention.

In fact, Reading have emerged as a serious possibility with an offer that is believed to be marginally higher than Celtic's.

Middlesbrough's bid is made less attractive by the fact a huge part of the £5.5m fee is made up of add-ons.

Payment of those would depend on how successful Brown is on Teesside. The Premiership outfit have so far only been willing to come up with an initial fee of £4.2m.

Rangers have had a longstanding offer of £3.4m on the table.

Their bid was made back in January on the last day of the transfer window. Ibrox boss Walter Smith remains a huge admirer of the player he capped for Scotland.

However, chairman David Murray is unlikely to be able to come up with the kind of cash other clubs now appear willing to shell out.

Boro have already set aside a basic wage packet worth £25,000 a week to Brown and it is believed Celtic are prepared to match those terms with a contract worth £1.3m a year.

It now remains to be seen whether Riverside chiefs are willing to revise their original bid and top Celtic's £4.6m offer for a player manager Gareth Southgate has identified as apriority target.

Boro's chief executive Keith Lamb denied that a formal offer had been tabled for Brown.

But he said: "We have had discussions with Hibernian about the player but he is one of many on our manager's list of potential targets."

In the article it says that it remains unclear whether Celtic 's bid had been topped by a rival bid.Another bit of outstanding journalism from Keef.

And 4 mill and 25k a week.I f'kin hope it's not true.I thought offering 4 for him and his mate was excessive but 4 just for him alone is ludicrous.
I really hope it's made up of add ons if true altho seeing what the article says about the Boro bid that's unlikely.

One thing for sure Hibs & Petrie have played a blinder

Brown is a good player, but so was Riordan and he's not has the best time of it at Celtic. I would be worried that the money spent could be risky.

That's because we got Riordan for * all, he's only had a around 5 starts this season, Strachan will value Brown if he lands him for 4 Mil

Also we should chuck some rejects in to maybe get him for less

Just don't buy this at all.No way on earth Lawwell would pay this kinda cash for an unproven player. If he is signing it's gonna be for significantly less than the figures quoted.
It's suits both clubs for a high figure to be touted anyways.

    And 25k a week???No f'kin way,What was Aiden's new deal 14k a week or summat??

4.4m is suprisingly high. But if we can get rid of Graveson and Jarosik then we might be able to cover most of te cost of the transfer and have an asset that is not rapidly decreasing in value.

    From Vitalfootball.co.uk

Hibernian chairman Rod Petrie has refused to comment on claims that Middlesbrough are set to pay a staggering £5.5million for one-time Celtic target Scott Brown.

The 21-year-old was linked with a move to Celtic in January, along with fellow Hibee Kevin Thomson - who opted to move to the Rangers fun factory instead.

Petrie was quoted in the Edinburgh Evening News as saying: "It's likely there will be a lot of interest in Scott and that he'll move on in the summer. He is an international player, he has a talent that has been on show and you only have to look at the number of scouts who have come to Easter Road over the past couple of seasons to realise we have players that people enjoy coming to see.

"We said we would not do anything in January and Scott has done all we could have asked for him in terms of his contribution to the team. I wouldn't be doing my job if I did not know what interest there is in him but we don't get into the whys and wherefors, only when there is something concrete to say."

Further speculation claims that Gareth Southgate's Boro are prepared to pay Brown £25,000 basic pay. If the figures mentioned are even close to the truth, the finances of the English Premiership are even more out of control than was thought.

While Celtic boss Gordon Strachan has made it clear this season that the huge amounts of cash being pumped into the English game will make it increasingly hard to compete in the transfer market this summer - and that new markets will have to be explored - the thought of a pretty average side paying £5.5million for a pretty average player is shocking.

Brown is good enough for Hibs and the SPL, but it's hard to see if his style would fit into the English Premiership. Of course, it would be a great bit of business for Hibs as they convinced Rangers to pay £2million for Thomson in January, and that seemed slightly over-the-odds at the time.

Though at least it increases the chances of getting a good price for Danish bench-warmer Thomas Gravesen...!
