Ok, les risky to not getting 3rd place, and potentially a chance at 2nd ?

Like I said I think we need to spend on the cb position . However the calculations have to made so we don't make the wrong choices. I would argue the improvement of PSG potentially only taking 5 of rather than 7 would be outweighed by us spending money on cb's that don't work and us not qualifying for the cl.

What's the thoughts on Hendry so far ?

I think he's decent for the SPFL, not so sure about Europe tbh.

Hendry looks calm and composed but as with Ajer they are only young and should only be used at times and bleed them into the team , we need a higher class of defender to go straight in beside probably boyata.

Can't multi quote on my phone, but I probably jumped the gun wanting to argue about not being able to compete with the top teams. I'm all for signing better players to make qualifying easier and make us more competitive once we are there.

Too much * gets heaped on the defence. Of course it could be better, but so could the attacking side of our team because to be outscored by the Huns was * apalling.

    agreed

but surely a team that "builds" and "creates" from the back... as we are apparently set up to do, would require competent cover from solid and reliable CB's ?

For a large, large part of the season Rogic, Roberts, Griffiths, Armstrong and Dembele were out injured. It’s not a surprise at all.

Naw it wasn't mate as it mattered the square root of * all. If we had scored 300 league goals and performed the same in the cl it would have made no material difference to anything.

I dont know if he has any blame on it but we dropped points all but one of the games he started, most against quite weak opposition as Dundee and St Johnstone. Can't evaluate his contribuition so far but 1) he seems to be jinxed 2) his career pre Celtic was way too mediocre for me to see his signing with the slightest excitement.

If anything, the fact that a 23 year old coming from Dundee that sat on the bench of awful teams for most of his life can come, get the number 4 jersey and be a first team regular just after arriving, which implies he is better than what we got, is quite a reason to worry about our defence.

When they were not injured, at best one of these guys would be in the pitch in a given time. Sometimes one of Dembele/Griffiths plus Rogic

Quite impressed that he’s not shown any fear from his first game, looks confident and definitely has quality. Of course he needs to improve but he’s been playing next to Ajer a lot who isn’t experienced either so it’s a steep learning curve. With Toure helping out I think he has all the attributes to be a top centre back.

Main point is that he always got played right side of 3 at the back or even at right back where he didn’t look comfortable at times. He just needs time and to put the work in.

Europe of course will be the real test.

Looking at the season before, when they were mostly fit and available, Roberts, Rogic and Dembele were all starters. That’s not the point though, for large parts they were all unavailable at the same time.

Just so happens those are our most creative players and biggest goalscorers.

We owe it to Ajer to bring someone in to aid his development.. Cant take the chance on Compper..

Hope Simunovic has had a reality check too..

Boyata, Ajer, Simunovic , Compper and Hendry.

Need at least 4 CB's, would get rid of Simunovic and bring in one established CB.

    Completely unsure.

Have severe doubts over whether he will ever be good enough. Hes also 24 at the end of this season. By no means retiring age obviously but he shouldn't be counted as a project.

He has shown in games he can be brilliant but it's the consistency and the potential for a * up that's worrying. He's young still, I'll grant him that, but we should defo be lookin get to freshen up the defence. I agree that experience needs to be brought in as we have young CBs and hendry, ajer and boyata could learn from him, but to rest on our laurels and say ach boyata will do, he's decent, I think is folly as we should be aiming higher for a better quality player. Problem is, experience usually comes at a price, not just transfer fee but wages too. I don't think Commper is it. So a solid experienced CB must be brought in this window IMO.

Boyata may come good and show in the next 18 months why we signed him, but at the moment he's just ok, not brilliant and we need better than that. If he doesn't seem to improve come next year, I'd look to move him on.
