Is Belgium's 4th choice CB after Vincent Kompant, Jan Verthongen and Toby Aldewiereld good enough for Celtic?

Clearly, seeing at the minute his 3rd choice in a back 3.

Why is it when folk criticise and ask for money to be spent, others seem to think we are demanding a fortune spent and demanding champion league final positions?
Why can't it be simply somewhere between there and where we are now?
5 million on a quality CB, and again on a keeper, and we can be more certain of coming 3rd in a group and even hopeful of sneaking a result that could see us sneak second.

Hardly asking for money to be spent in the realms of being able to sign players to take us to the final.

He is good enough for us, I’m just unsure if he’s reliable enough to be first choice.

He's not comfortable with being THE senior CB.

If he plays alongside somecunt with experience (considering Boyata himself still lacks some experience) then he performs better.

If he keeps it simple and uses his brain, he's a great player with outstanding qualities.

Do you think a 4m centre back would have stopped PSG scoring 7 against us?

It wouldn't but if we take that attitude we'd be as well giving up now.

Unless we're really lucky and get the likes of Spartak Moscow and teams of that ilk from pots 1 and 2 then we will probably never have a realistic chance of finishing second in the group.
It's hard enough just getting into the CL these days. Maybe if we adjust our tactics and approach against the superpowers it could help but that's probably for another thread.

There's too many 'ifs' surrounding Boyata for me. Whenever people or even myself look at his good points, the same ifs continually come up.

Another if, is if people think we cannot improve upon him I'm worried.

    I know what you mean.

However I'm more meaning not looking to spend that sort of money on a couple new CBs just because it might not guarantee a last 16 spot, isn't the attitude to take.

It would certainly help. The defence needs freshened up.

Nah, I agree, been saying for ages we need an Ntcham type signing except at CB. Just feel a lot of people are coming at it from the angle that it should suddenly make us all conquering in Europe and guarantee us getting out the groups.

Brendan gets let off so lightly on the defense.
Ive no doubt with the right approach the defenders to stop us getting battered in europe are there.
A right back is needed though.

Our system doesn't do our defenders any favours. Though you could say the same with City's system. John Stones made loads of mistakes at City but Guardiola defended him to the hills saying he wanted him to take risks and talking about how much balls he had to play that way.

I think there are many competent defenders who'd look as exposed in our system with the way we play and so much emphasis on playing out from the back and taking a few risks.

If people think there's a defender within our budget who'll come in and look flawless in our system then I think they're being very optimistic.

Don't think it's the system ,the amount of goals we lose from individual errors is what's killing is in Europe and it's the usual suspects every time .a keeper rb,2cbs keep Tierney ajer clear out the rest

On that night, no, it wouldn't have.
But it may have helped us with Bayern not scoring a second. Or Man City the season before not getting 3 at home to us.
All if's, but's, maybe's, but as @Mr Shelby says, if we take that attitude of just not bothering to sign a decent CB because PSG will still beat us, we may as well give up now.

No one is saying that though, quite literally everyone is saying the same as you - sign a CB in the calibre of Ntcham, Sinclair, Dembele etc and we would do a lot * better. We aren't goign to suddenly stop PSG putting 7 past us, maybe next time it willonly be the 5. But it will help with small improvements that can get us a turn of fortune to get a result in other games that were closer.

Celtic should never be losing 7 goals to any team, i don't care how much their players are worth, it's totally unacceptable and utterly embarrassing.

A 4mil CB would certainly give us a more of a chance against a better class of opposition, which is exactly what we come up against in Europe.

With Dermot and Brendan at the helm 10s not in danger he will see that through,it's more like 12 and however far we want to go, but it's about making inroads in Europe along with cleaning up domestically treble treble..the huns couldn't even do that never mind a double treble in the 90's where getting schooled by grasshoppers and the likes finishing bottom of Cl group.

You can't be 'more certain' of something mate. That looks pedantic but actually cuts to the heart of the debate here. You can make calculations and assumptions and gamble as to whether you think this increases our chances of getting to the last 16 but you could spent £2 billion and it wouldn't make our progress a certainty.

I'd like us to really spend money on a cb though.

We spent roughly £2.5m on Wanyama and Van Dijk.

They two would make a * major difference. I don’t understand the thought that spending money on quality woulf make a difference for us.

They would've scored 3 at most against a back line of players with enough mental strength to avoid stupid mistakes.
