    Celtic FC: Record-breakers

With a history that stretches back over a hundred years and includes 49 league titles (and counting) it’s hardly a surprise that Celtic are the holders of a number of footballing records. Here are ten of the best record-breaking achievements in the history of the Hoops:

    1. In May 2016 a 7-0 hammering of Motherwell set the team off on a run of unbeaten games that would stretch for an incredible 69 matches. This set a new record for a British professional club and smashed the 100-year-old record set by Willie Maley's Celtic team during WW1.

    2. Celtic is the cup-winning champion, having nabbed the most Scottish cup wins with 38. The first of these dates all the way back to the 1891-92 season and of course The Bhoyshave taken home the trophy in both of the last two seasons.

    3. One of the proudest of all Celtic records was set on the 25thof May 1967 when they became the first British team to win European Cup. The Lisbon Lions finally came from behind to beat Inter Milan 2-1 in the Portuguese National Stadium, an 84th minute goal from Stevie Chalmers proving decisive.

    4. During the 2003-04 season Celtic set another Scottish league record, this time for the most consecutive top-flight wins. Beginning with a 5-0 thumping of Dundee United in August 2003, Celtic went on to win 25 in a row, only dropping a point when drawing with Motherwell at Celtic Park on March 14, 2004.

    5. For a club with the kind of record Celtic have enjoyed over the years, perhaps it’s not a surprise to find they hold the record for the largest home victory. That was the 11–0 score-line Celtic posted against a Dundee side back in 1895.

    6. Another record that doesn’t look like being beaten any time soon is the 121 completed seasons that Celtic have spent in the top flight of Scottish football, dating all the way back to 1890.

    7. Fraser Forster is at least in the conversation when Celtic fans talk about their best ever keeper, with memories of that famous Champions League game against Barcelona in 2012 tilting the argument in his favour. The Spanish press dubbed Forster ‘The Great Wall’ after that performance, but the big man from Northumberland set a Scottish league record for the longest time without letting in a goa: 1,265 minutes.

    8. When Celtic played Aberdeen at Hampden Park, on the 24thof April 1937 for the Scottish Cup Final, another new record was set. The attendance of 147,365 still stands as a European record for a club match to this day.

    9. Another attendance record was set during the 1969–70 European Cup semi-final at Hampden Park when Celtic played Leeds. Celtic were nominally the ‘home’ team, making the attendance of 136,505 the highest ever attendance for a UEFA competition match as well as a record for the largest home attendance in British football.

    10. This one hasn’t been achieved just yet, but we had to include it anyway! As everybody knows, the record for most consecutive league wins is 9: jointly held by Celtic and Rangers. With their seventh consecutive title claimed last year, surely in three years from now Celtic will be celebrating that magical 10 in a row!
