    Every now and then, someone will argue that an Irish or Scottish player doesn’t get the credit that he deserves because he doesn’t have an exotic-sounding name. I obviously have way too much time on my hands, and I thought it might be a laugh to look up the English equivalents for some of our foreign players’ names:

    Stone
    Peak Edwards Lawrenson Lee

    Lawrenson

    ​
    All but one of players - the goalkeeper, who didn’t make a senior appearance - represented Celtic at senior level at some point between 1975 and now.

    I doubt anyone’s going to get that, so I’ll just tell you:

    Izaguirre means ‘clearing exposed to the wind’ in Basque; Lee (‘clearing’) is the closest equivalent I could find in English.

    We brought him in on loan from Nantes in the 2012-13 season. He never made a senior appearance.

    I wish I knew 'Pierre Van Hooijdonk' translated to 'Hayden' back in the day. I could have saved myself £150 on getting his name on the back of my shirt.
