    A right few years ago my Da’s Supporters club he was in was having a huge dinner for the clubs anniversary.
    It was taking place in the Europa hotel which is the most bombed building in Europe and most bombed hotel in the world. Ironic because I’m pretty sure there were a few men present in the room that probably had a hand in the historics. Big Billy came over with Liz and also Paul Lambert and Sean Fallon. I was in the fortunate position to be able to spend a fair amount of time in their company and drinking at the same table.

    Sean Fallon was a really funny man and loved the craic. Lambert was more reserved and spoke only when included in the conversation. Cesar had this real presence and stature around him and Liz complimented him as part of a perfect couple. Anyway Billy and the Mrs had been put up in a Holiday Inn a short distance away and was asked if his hotel was suitable. He said that it was good enough but had a good chuckle about when he awoke in the morning and pulled back the curtains. Right across from his hotel was a large mural with two gunmen and the slogans “Welcome to Loyalist Sandy Row” and large letters UFF. He said he had a wee think about this painting was only about 80 yards from his hotel and the UFF didn’t realise they had the Captain of the Lisbon Lions staying in their community.

    THE route and road closures for the funeral of Celtic legend Billy McNeill have been revealed.

    Huge crowds are expected to line the streets to pay respects to club great who passed away last Monday at the age of 79 after a long and courageous battle against dementia.

    As a consequence, a number of roads restrictions will be put in place. Between 10am and 2pm on Friday, five streets in the city centre will see closures.

    Due to the expectation of large crowds paying their respects, the following roads will be restricted for safety purposes.

    The funeral to take place within the Roman Catholic Church of St Aloysius on Rose Street, Garnethill on Friday from 11.30am.

    The funeral cortege will then head to Celtic Park for around 1.30pm, where thousands of fans will be given the chance to pay their respects to the iconic former manager and player.

    Rose Street will be closed between Renfrew Street and Buccleuch Street from 10am.

    Parts of Hill Street (between Cambridge Street and Scott Street), Dalhousie Street (between Renfrew Street and Buccleuch Street), and Renfrew Street (between Dalhousie Street and Rose Street) will also be shut off to vehicles.

    The one-way system on Garnet Street between Sauchiehall Street and Renfrew Street will also be removed.

    All closures and disruption are expected to be complete by 2pm.

    Billy McNeill led the Hoops when they defeated Inter Milan 2-1 to win the 1967 European Cup and was captain for nine successive titles as well as seven Scottish Cups and six League Cups.

    A MESSAGE FROM THE McNEILL FAMILY

    WE would like to say thank you for all the kind messages we have received over the last week. They have cheered us up tremendously at this difficult time. The love and affection shown towards our father is nothing short of amazing and is something we will never forget.

    The displays and tributes played before last Saturday’s match reiterated what a special club Celtic is and how big a part of our father’s life it was. Then for our No.5 to score the winning goal was truly magical.

    We would also like to thank all the clubs who marked his passing with a minute’s applause. We really appreciate all the respect shown towards our father.

    Our father always made time for the fans and knew how important they are so we would like to send an open invite to help us pay our respects to him. His body will be taken into St Aloysius Church on Thursday evening at 6:30pm with the church staying open for a short while after the service.

    For those wishing to attend the funeral there will be limited spaces at the church so please arrive early.

    For those who are unable to attend the church, the service will also be broadcast live at Celtic Park, where the funeral cortège will also arrive approximately at 1:30pm.

    Thereafter there will be a private burial.
