John Squire my personal favourite, his solo at the end of I Am The Resurrection is so classy yet haunting.

Some of his riffs are pretty simple and straightforward, but he just seems to ooze class and make it look effortless.

Don't listen to many 'older' bands so only going by current musicians.

Mark Tremonti is probably my favourite guitarist just now.

The Rust In Peace album is absolutely brilliant. Glad I have seen them on that tour. Think Friedman lives in Japan now if I remember correctly.

Easily the best Megadeth album for me. He left because he didn't like what was happening to Megadeth and metal in general so he went seeking new challenges in Japan. I'm guessing he must have fell in love with Japanese music culture so decided to stay.

His latest solo album is really good and well worth a listen.

As the story goes, even Hendrix agreed with that.

    Manitas de Plata

Just been watching Guitar Heroes on BBC4 and came across this amazing man whom i had never heard of.Absolutely incredible is all i can say.
Unfortunately after doing the wiki on the man, it seems he only died last week.Well i will be looking at more of his stuff as a tribute!

Give it a look and listen!

Another classic performance from the same show, a brilliant rendition of Jumpin' Jack Flash from Johnny Winter:

I've always liked John Frusciante, formerly of the Chili Peppers. Surprised not to see him mention.

Eddie Vedder is pretty good, entertaining stuff. Tom Morello is * good.

    Jeff Tweedy ain't bad, either:

It's all hugely subjective...I mean, where do Rodrigo y Gabriela come into a discussion like this. They're amazing together.

Completely depends on the genre. For pure technical proficiency I'd go with Michael Romeo (Symphony X), for marrying invention with technique I'd go for John Petrucci (Dream Theater), but that's only within prog metal. Good shout on Marty Friedman as well, guy is a beast. Had Jason Becker not got ALS we no doubt would be talking about him right now as well.
