Imagine him singing us into battle with that song? We would be unstoppable.

Completely agree with most of that mate but theres no doubt it would be a lazy... and indeed cheap option.

Weve needed TWO new RB's for now on 2 years. Signing matthews would not solve either spot imo.

Hes far too fragile fitness wise and would/ could take up a spot, as you say, a young up and comer who would benefit more from providing cover.

Matthews is a full back entering the tail end if his career and is injury prone.

Would be a waste of a wage and more importantly not fix the ridiculous predicament we find ourselves in.

As you say... a high caliber first chioce Rb is needed, with a young talent as back up. Matthews is neither of these things and signing him would be tantamount to utter self harm imo.

This RB debacle weve been dealing with these past years is at an absolute critical point. If we dont fix it now it will cost us much much more than a few million quid.

Would take him as a back up to a new RB over Ralston playing back up that’s for sure!

Surely hasn’t seen Ralston at RB Matthews way better but still not my top choice would have Matthews as back up over Ralston all day long

He’ll be fine as back up as long as we get Stacey or Smith in.

I would gladly take him as backup if Ralston is the other option. He would need to take a decent wage cut though to reflect tbe fact he's only a squad player.

No problem with this at all as long as it’s backup, always like Matthews. Nout special but dependable

In terms of ability I got no issue signing him. Quite decent player infact. The injuries cannot be ignored though. Look at we have just through with compper. Lenny will remember the boerreigter debacle too. Let's not risk paying someone to sit in the medical room. We are definitely capabale of finding similar quality without the non stop niggly injuries

Mibbe not 27 for all players, but certainly for matthews imo

World cup study from from 2014 found the peak age of ALL footballers to ge 27.5.
Another report on the epl in 2012 found that players develop "age based limitations" started to develop at 28 for average players, with peak ages of performance at 24-28, narrowed for attacking players at 25-26.

A 5 year report from opta done across the 5 "biggest leagues" in europe found that dribbling, pass success ratio, goal assists etc all start to decine at the age of 27-28 for full backs.

Now take matthews. We sold him at the optimal age of 23... he was arguably at his peak then, fit, title winning, 12 time capped international CL footballer. (Ironically signed by lee * congerton of all people). Injury * his first season there losing his place to billy * jones, followed by 2 spells of loan wilderness with injury ridden sporadic performances. Only last season with lack of options did sunderland give him a proper chance and even then he was a key member of a dismal dismal side.

He represent almost zero resale value, is injury prone and is considered these days as lower championship, league one standard. Now i dont actually agree with that but imagine this scenario...

We sign a great 5m rb... who gets a long term injury.

Would you really want to rely on adam Matthews holding that position down fir months?
