Check out this * hump from Follow Follow, regarding the Nike deal.

First of all he quotes the official statement from Peter:

    "Celtic extend agreement with Nike

Celtic have extended their current five-year deal with kit manufacturers Nike for a further five years.
The new contract will come into effect in the summer of 2010 and, according to a club spokesman, will be in excess of the existing £25m agreement.
"We are absolutely delighted to announce this new deal with Nike," said chief executive Peter Lawwell.
"To once again secure a partnership of this kind with the world's leading sports brand is tremendous news."
Lawwell says the continuing relationship with the American-based sports firm bolsters Celtic's overall brand.
"It is a deal which extends our global profile and reach and one which will bring great benefit to the club," he added.
"Clearly, it is most satisfying that the club is making such progress and striving forward in this manner.
"At all times, Celtic strives for excellence on and off the field. It is fitting that as champions of Scotland and a regular Uefa Champions League participant we are to continue our partnership with Nike, one of the most prestigious brands in sport.
"Clearly, it is also pleasing that Nike once again sees Celtic as one of the leading names in world football and is happy to continue our association.
"This extended relationship will allow us to further achieve our aspirations both at home and abroad."

His retort to the above news?

"Seems to me if you read into the statement it isn't such a good deal they are getting after all."

Management have no excuses for loosing the league as we always had a better squad but injuries have taken their toll all season. If we can get relatively injury free, we will win the league.

Yes, I have been stating the problems at Rangers for several seasons now. The Kaunas result and the collapse of the banks was the gentle push into all these woes.

A good piece of business. It's true that this is only a continuation of the current deal, that we won't have any extra funds available via that deal and it only stabilises the club's future, but it's indisputable that the stability this gives us, combined with the improvement to the wages we can offer when Balde leaves, grants the club an oppertunity to spend a larger amount of money in search of short-term capital.

I'm not saying that we should go mental and spend tons on players, but prudently buying players that can improve the squad (Who were previously outwith our spending power) should provide short-term gains and as a result set up a platform from which we can not only maintain our current position in Europe, but improve upon it.

When it comes down to it, this deal DOES offer us both long-term and short-term benefits, albeit indirectly.

The money from this deal will mostly be used to keep Celtic operating at the level they currently are. Anyone who thinks the majority of this money is going to be used on transfers is going to be in for a disappointment. The money will be used for wages and to ensure that our debt level doesn't go up again.

I think the board have to be commended for managing to get this deal under the current economic circumstances. It is basically the same deal they got the last time but the economic situation was much better at that time. This deal means that we can, at worst, remain at our present level for a while. Which 3 or 4 years down the line could result in us being quite a way ahead of Rangers. That would be nice!

I believe this is great news, it secures part of our finances for a further 5 years. Remember that if we can manage to keep our current level of income and outgoings then we will have continue to see in excess of 10m profits every year.

The reason we can not spend this 10m extra is that our finances are not exactly guaranteed to be maintained at the current level so we have to be prepared for a potential non Champions League season.

Rangers had no Champions League this season and are being forced to try sell players and make staff redundant. Celtic have saved a pot of money so that WE WILL NOT NEED TO SELL OR WEAKEN THE SQUAD shall we have a season without European football.

We are being managed correctly in this regard.

it is good news but i hope and pray that lawell gets the finger out in the summer and spends decent money on decent players of quality as we are in need for them.
