He struggled against that big striker from accies a few weeks back, prior to them going down to 10 men. Off the top of my head I don't think he was convincing away to St mirren on boxing day either.

It's fairly obvious he's not used to coming up against the type of striker who's not interested in playing football and more about battling with him and he's adapting to it.

Its no coincidence he looks at his best playing against better players, i.e in the European games.

Im not saying he hasnt had one or two poor performances, but as the original poster had mentioned, i dont think it is right to suggest that he is still adapting or has struggled. And i think its unrealistic to suggest that he should automatically be able to out muscle every physical striker that he plays against.
Theres been no one player who he has come up against who has gotten the better of him on more than one occaision, which does not suggest that he by any means struggling. Of the players mentioned- doidge, cosgrove, morelos, okompoe(?), Dykes, only the hamilton striker has directly beaten Julien to score. There is far more evidence to suggest that it is Ajer who struggles with the physcial aspect and that Julien is infact more of a problem for the opposition.

Id be fairly confident that statistically he would be our best defender in tackles made, headers won, etc.

I dont think its the case that he isnt used to playing the physcial game either. He has made close to 200 senior appearances prior to joining us, the majority of those in a league of a far higher quality. The french league has physical players also and its naive to think that he hasnt been exposed to that side of the game before coming to scotland.

Of course he can't be expected to out muscle everyone he plays, don't think anyone has ever suggested that? He could be more smart however, sometimes he'd be better off letting them win the first ball then take it off them after that. Just cause dykes, obika etc haven't directly beaten him to score doesn't mean he hasn't struggled against them at times this season. At times he can get too tight to big physical strikers and get involved in a battle of strength, with them which is exactly what they want.

Im not going to argue with you on that, he's easily our best option there and despite his struggles (at times) he's made a huge difference to our defence.

Of course he has to adapt, any player moving to a new country and a new league would have to. Scottish football is completely different to French or German football. Far less technical and more physical.

Maybe comes across like I'm getting on his back which I'm not, he's been a brilliant signing and put in some huge performances for us this season, just pointing out areas I feel he could improve.

I appreciate what your saying and I know we are both in support of him, its just a gripe of mine that our fans keep going back to specifically the Livi game- where he has put in more than enough big and solid performances in more crucial games to dispel any notion that he “struggles” physically. For me it factually isnt the case that its an ongoing thing. As long as he wins the majority of duels that comes his way, then its the main thing.

One more important issue regarding Juliens game for me is his use of the ball, which along with Ajer, in recent weeks has been poor when Brown is marked out of a pass as i think we can be pressured to giving it away too sloppily.

players like Okompoe are a handful for any defence, and as you say it isnt about trying to fight fire with fire and muscle for muscle, but to contain them and try to reduce their impact on the game as much as possible. Which i believe Julien has done. I dont think Julien gets enough credit for his handling of morelos, who barring a free shot at goal from 12 yards and a back post slide after a break away has hardly had a sniff against us.

and i know that he is gona have a big part to play as we move towards no.9

I thought the ref was letting Curtis main away with a lot of bad challenges on Sunday and the * started taking liberties with it one was a clear yellow card and ref didn’t even give a free kick

What a * warrior, in the second half when his 9 other outfield players crumbled into nothing he was absolutely outstanding.

Even more so when you consider the knock he took first half.

Thank * he avoided a yellow too cause he'll be absolutely massive next week.

MOTM for us by a distance. Only outfield player with pass marks in that second half.
