Aye I have been doing that finding cars im interested in online, most have a reg to make it easier I did use money supermarket mostly, the black box was only knocking around £150 off and I'm not wanting that, the two cheapest quotes were churchill and debenhams iv done it around 4 or 5 times with different cars with mixed results tho but all over 1k

VW group cars is all I have ever owned. Had the Ibiza for my first car now I have a Golf GTD which I have owned for a couple of months now.

I just don’t fancy Vauxhall’s at all. Like you I have heard too many bad stories such as failing gearboxes etc. Don’t fancy Fiat either.

I would probably take a Ford but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

As someone has said you can’t really go wrong with Japanese either. Honda, Toyota, Mazda etc.

My dad has owned a few Honda Civic’s and they have been very reliable. They just don’t seem to need much work done other than your usual consumables and wear and tear parts. The Japs have always been known for good build quality.

You don't want a black box if you can avoid it. It made a huge difference to my daughter's insurance as she is young, but the restrictions it imposes are tough.

She's forced to drive well under the speed limit if it's dark, damp or cold. There is no need for it most of the time. She either becomes a nuisance to other drivers, or gets scored down.

As boring as it is there's a few Honda Jazz around your price point.

@cas79 I’d second going against the black box. I’ve never had one either but my mate has and he hated every second of it, and didn’t think it was worth the small saving in the end.

If you don’t have any claims in your first year, your age will see the insurance drop for year two, and it’ll drop more with each year you don’t have a claim.

I know * all about cars but passed my test in November there, bought a 2010 1.2 Hyundai i20 for £1k in December.

Reasonably economical, rates well in reliability indexes and cost £800 for a years insurance, although I went for a dearer one that included windscreen cover, roadside cover and courtesy car. Same as you I didn't want to black box policy so went with Hastings.

If you're patient on Gumtree and Autotrader you will get something.

Honda Jazz seemed to be one that I kept being told to look at as well @cas79

Good shout for a wee city/town hopper. Missus got a new I10 under scrappage scheme years ago. Reliable, deceptively bigger inside than you'd think and generally cheap all round runner.

Ps- forgot to add that I know * all about motors too but this motor seemed to top a lot of polls for the one to go for on a budget for town driving.
