With the likelihood of Brexit being increased by the recent elections in the U.K., I began to wonder- did any Celtic fans do calculations and scenarios on what would happen to Celtic in the event of a Brexit (soft or hard), or even if that resulted in Scotland splitting off, to stay in the EU?

Could fear of Brexit be the reason why the club spends so little? Or is the EPL at a bigger risk of a crash and burn?

If the pound tanks against the euro would we struggle to shop anywhere other than the SPL and England?

    Depends on work permits.

Brexit would have a more adverse impact than independence, I think

So we get to be truly independent for a few weeks? Nah I'll not bother then.

No country's truly independent - we need to interact with other nations in all sorts of ways. There's strength in numbers being part of the EU in trade negotiations etc. A tiny country like Scotland or even the UK (as we're about to find out) has no power in the world and will be dictated to by the powerful countries/trading blocks.

I'd rather be trading with country's than locked in an EU type deal. Dont like your deal? Fine, we shop elsewhere. Not when your locked in by another ruler you have zero say over. * that.

When we buy players outside of EU, in which currency do we pay the club? For example, Hapoel Be'er Sheva.

The places we'll want to shop will nearly all be bigger and more powerful than us and we'll be shafted.

My opinion is the brexit debate has been plagued by pointless hysteria and very little is going to change, that if Brexit happens at all. Remainers engaged in a ridiculous scare campaign claiming that Britain would become North Korea overnight. It would be impracticable, undesirable and even impossible to kick out european residents overnight and there is too much money and interests involved.

Scottish independence would be largely good to Celtic. The work permit rule would be dropped and Celtic could explore the african and south american markets better. A home grown player quota could finally be enforced, meaning we and our opponents would stop sourcing english journeymen and have to develop players

Why not take that idea to its logical conclusion, and * off into the wilderness to live in solitude? You'd be truly independent, then.

The work permit issue is the key there. I think independence and a return to the EU would be both best for Celtic and for Scotland in general. For Celtic for example then again all the other 27 EU countries players would not count against any quota's for foreign players as is the case now.

Fucksake, the Guardian literally advised people to stock food and toilet paper. The very much same type of scare stories, picking the worst case scenario and amplfying it, that was used against scottish independence.

You can very see by this topic that people have an expectation their lives are going to be changed dramatically. What could honestly happen? Odsonne Edouard is kicked out of the country by a militia?

These liberal smugs calmy watched austerity for a decade, poor people burning alive in Grenfell, the healthcare being destroyed, and no one gave a flying * to all of that but somehow leaving the EU will be the end of the world.

I don't think anybody calmly watched those things. I'm not actually sure what side of the argument you're coming from - are you left wing but against liberals and pro-independence and pro-brexit?

Money talks, assuming we'd still be in a position to spend millions on players by and large things shouldn't seemingly change that much at that level of wealth.

Yeah celtic and the player might just have to fill in a bit more paperwork to complete a signing.

Youth signings we might try and sign from outside Scotland on the other hand may become more challenging then they already are.

Money can help ride things like this out, Rangers and the rest of SPFL might well struggle and so could we possibly in a few years as profits fall, but brexit and/or independence will always, always effect us plebites first and most severely.

    But who to "shop" with?

It's all very well saying we can trade with the world, but the fact is, there aren't any dirt farmers in Comoros who want to buy computer parts off Eric in Birmingham.

According to the IMF there are only 35 first-world, rich, advanced economies in the world; of which 27 are in the EU.

So we're about to possibly give up free access to 27 of the world's richest countries, for the chance that we may get good deals with the other 8.

Those 8 countries are all further away than the EU, so it costs more to transport the goods; takes longer to transport the goods; and uses a lot more fuel, thereby damaging the environment more.

Brexit might not be the sh*tstorm that some predict, but economically it will at the very least make trading with others more expensive, compilcated and damaging to the climate.

It's a good question 12 years ago when the pound was really strong against the euro we were seen as being a bit richer compared to other top clubs in Europe because of that scenario
