How is form 3 years ago more relevant than current form ?

South Africa got past wales but the skin of their teeth and England just beat the best team on the planet and deserved to do so. South Africa were big underdogs going in.

Also Matt Dawson wrote an article saying he would have picked an all English 15 from both squads combined.

Wales are the reigning European champions (Grand Slam)
SA are the reigning Southern Hemisphere champions
NZ have been the best team on the planet for years

In footbal terms, it would be like, if Hibs had produced a great one-off perfomance yesterday and beaten us, and then making them favourites for the final against Sevco.

Most sensible people, who knew football, would say, great performance against the best team in Scotland , but expecting them to reproduce it against the 2nd best team, is unlikely.

If you’re going by things like that, NZ were ranked 1 England 3 South Africa 4 so it’s not a fair analogy.

NZ hammered South Africa in opening stages & England absolutely crushed NZ ( in a way I have never seen against NZ) in semi final.
it’s very common to use current tournament form to decide favourites however world rankings could have been used as well to determine England as favourites & rightly so.

It doesn’t really matter now they lost, so it’s not worth trying to rewrite things really.

That Depeche Mode when we score!!
NZ lost to England because of pure massive pressure. Their whole nation expected them to win a Third World Cup in a row but bulked heavily under that pressure.
England were outclassed in the final totally, end of.

Listen your the only person I have seen who has said England were not favorites to win the final. Pundits, fans, casuals.... the only one. So either your some sort of rugby genius who made over 3 times his money betting on South Africa on Saturday or your talking absolute *.

Thanks, you'll make me blush. But it's not genius, it's just that I prefer not to put to much weight on one great performance, but looks at things over a suitable period of time e.g. this year we've lost to Wales twice and only drawn with Scotland, so I thought the win against NZ was more likely to be a one-off super performance, than a sign of a new improved, permanent world beating team.

John Barclay retires from international duty.

Terrific servant to Scottish rugby. A hard-as-nails workhorse who gave everything he had for the shirt.

    Thanks for the memories!

    So glad it’s back.

Might be my favourite yearly sporting competition.

Sadly think Scotland will have a very poor tournament.

Finn is a big miss but quite happy with the squad. Today will basically tell us how our tournament will go.

After a few years of optimism, I genuinely have no * clue how this campaign will go.

Looking forward to it though... best sporting tournament on the planet!

Christ on a bike! Michael Chieka's voice! Who was the brain-donor at the Beeb who thought that anyone would want to listen to that noise!?
