Used to go and watch my local club (Sligo Rovers) quite often, but as the standard started going downhill I lost interest but if I'm being honest I was nothing more than a Blow in/sunshiner.

The thing is, I don't even blame the GAA for the poor standard of Irish football. I would be more inclined to lay the blame on the FAI using their lge as an afterthought and the countries proximity to England which has a far superior lge.

    Some good memories though........

Shels were the first matches I ever went to see as a kid, next door neighbour played for them and loved going to Tolka Park on a Friday night, I dont really keep up with them these days though, most of my mates support Bohs so not as if they're going to sack them to go watch Shels.

The League of Ireland, and indeed, the national side, have suffered badly because of the likes of John Delaney and his cronies, siphoning off the handsome profits made by the FAI on Aviva ticket sales, sponsorships, merchandise and TV deals, and rubbing fans noses in it by living it up on fancy holidays etc.

Instead of reinvesting those profits into the LOI and grassroots football, they'd rather look to Britain to see if they can snap up any handy 2nd and 3rd generation Irish talent.

Yes thats what is even worse about what Tesco's are doing. They are not just holding up he redevelopment of Dalymount Park they are also holding up the whole project around the stadium which the whole community needs. Very selfish and short sighted by Tesco's as an improved shopping center would surely be to their own benefit long term as well.

This rubbish shows how Irish FOOTBALL is viewed. By prob about 80% of the so called Irish sporting public. Use of the poisious 'socker' word explains itself.
Prefering to watch 30 underage goalkeepers, lumpin bogball, is a new one, hard to digest.
REASON 1,456 on why they (ISP) don't go to Airtricity lge games...

Soccer in Ireland is an embarrassment. It needs a huge overhaul, which will never happen. I am as big a football fan as you'll find, but I'd be nowhere near a ground here. GAA needs the support, so I'm completely with the likes of Gabriel. My local side is Portadown and I'm a Catholic, so that didn't help things growing up and discovering the game.

I suppose supporting the GAA over soccer in the North holds more cultural significance. My 'local' or nearest team would be Coleraine, but I opted for Cliftonville back in 2018 because I'm Catholic and I dont like butchers aprons and chants some Coleraine supporters come out with. Cliftonville seem to be a big community based team as they released booklets in the Irish language and opposed playing '* Save The Queen' being played at the cup final in order to keep everything neutral.

The Free State on the other hand seems to be predominately a Culchie vs. City-slicker divide. I know alot of Dubs are obsessed with the Hurling and the Football, but thats still remains the impression I get. Plus, how many people from Galway actually support Galway United, vice versa with Wexford, Waterford, Finn Harps etc.
