Chris Sutton says 'complications' have stalled Celtic's move for Birger Meling.

The Hoops are keen on bringing a left-back to the club with the depature of Kieran Tierney.

Rosenborg's Meling is one of the players on Neil Lennon's shortlist at that position.

Former Celtic striker Sutton was confident a deal was on the verge of being complete last week, but nothing has materialised yet.

Sutton was asked by presenter Darrell Currie on BT Sport for an update on the situation with eight days left of the transfer window.


He said: "As we well know, there are always compications with signings Darrell. I thought it was going to happen, will it get over the line?

"Celtic still need a left-back. Interesting about the Greg Taylor stuff yesterday. There was talk he was left out because of a move to Celtic. Doesn't seem that way with what the Kilmarnock manager was saying, he was injured. Celtic need to strengthen in that area and other areas I do believe.



Sutton was then quizzed again by Currie: "Is Meling not going to happen?"

He added: "Transfer dealings are complicated. There's always little hitches."

Sutton's fellow pundit Stephen Craigan suggested Rosenborg's involvement in the Champions League could have implications if a deal is to be met.

The Norwegian side are 2-0 down from the first leg of their play-off clash against Dinamo Zagreb.

 

Craigans definitely got it right on this one for me. Rosenborg will not want to sell until after the qualifiers which will be why any move we've made has hit a brick wall up until now (if we have actually made an offer at all).

The media traction would indicate Taylor is the guy we want though.

The defender who plays for Rosenborg is on the Hoops‘ radar as they look for more cover in the position after Kieran Tierney’s departure for Arsenal.

Boli Bolingoli was signed for £3million earlier in the transfer window, however Neil Lennon has made it clear he wants another full-back.

SunSport can reveal that a Celtic scout watched the 24-year-old Norwegian in action during Rosenborg’s 2-0 Europa League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.

Hoops hero Chris Sutton claimed last week that the defender was close to joining the Parkhead outfit.
