Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor made the headlines for clocking up an astonishing 69 appearances for club and country over the course of last season.

With Scotland's 3-0 defeat to Belgium back in June bringing the curtain down on a season for McGregor which kicked off for the 26-year-old back in July of 2018 when Celtic faced off against Armenian side Alashkert in the Champions League qualifying rounds.

And the possibility put forward by the Scottish media that he played as many minutes, if not more, than any other player in Europe has now been confirmed by Spanish football site Marca.

Indeed McGregor's 59 appearances for the Hoops and 10 appearances in a Scotland jersey saw him spent more time on the pitch than any player in world football in 2018/2019.

His combined total of 5,894 minutes see him sat top of the list, ahead of Daley Blind of Ajax (5,819 minutes), Ruben Dias of Porto (5,790 minutes) and Liverpool keeper Allison Bekker (5,760 minutes).

While in terms of games played over the season in world football, McGregor comes in at third place overall, with Jesús Gallardo turning out 72 times for Mexico and club side Monterrey while Phillipe Coutinho clocking up 70 appearances with Barcelona and Brazil - as the latter won the Copa America.

On a side note, am amazed coutinho played 70 games! Thought he only got into Barca team late on in the season.

Not only has he been on the pitch more mins than every other player, but the quality of his performances remained at a really high standard. My biggest concern is KT had a similar record 1-2 years ago, and is now recovering from injury.

We need to recognise the physical burden we're putting these guys under, and begin to factor in proper rest and recovery breaks

I agree in the end up we couldn't afford to rest him due to how poor we were at the beginning of last season under the rat and the lack of able replacements.
We were dropping points a lot of the time that Kouassi and Ntcham were played.

We should be doing more in the transfer market right now to make sure we do have the options. Connell looks like he might need time to build up fitness and strength.

Might get there but not in the same class as Paul McStay at the moment. Similar for Petrov and Collins just off the top of my head of players who I think he can be compared to.

I don't think he's as good as Petrov or McStay.

Not yet and potentially not ever

I’m not too thrilled about that tbh. If he kept up that pace he would be riddled with injuries

I hope we can rest him a bit more now that we have Connell in. As others have said, playing that many games every season will eventually * him and cause long term injury

CALLUM McGregor has played more minutes of competitive football in season 2018/19 than any other player in world football.

It’s a remarkable statistic for the talented midfielder, who played a total of 69 games last season – 59 for Celtic and 10 for Scotland. Indeed only Philippe Coutinho with Brazil and Barcelona (70 games) and Jesus Gallardo with Mexico and Monterrey (72 games) played more games than McGregor.

The 26-year-old midfielder was a key figure for the Hoops last season as they made a clean sweep of the domestic honours in Scotland to secure a historic Treble Treble. He scored six goals throughout the campaign, while he also chalked up 16 assists.

And in 2018/19, he played a remarkable 5,894 minutes of competitive football, more than Ajax defender, Daley Blind (5,819 minutes) and Ruben Dias of Benfica (5,790 minutes).

That run began in Armenia on July 10, 2018 with a game against Alashkert, when he scored in a 3-0 win, while it ended on June 11, 2019, when he played in Scotland's 3-0 defeat away to Belgium.

Speaking exclusively to this week’s Celtic View, Hoops boss Neil Lennon said of the midfielder: “Callum’s a great player and you can see how important he is to the way we play. I do think there are more goals in him and that’s a great start for him to get off the mark in the second competitive game of the season.

“He’s got that creativity and he’s certainly a good finisher. It’s good to see him shooting from outside the box as well. It shows he has that aspect to his game and you don’t always see that because he can be so unselfish and try to find another pass. It’s another string to his bow, but in terms of his all-round game, it’s fantastic

Nowhere near as good as the maestro.McStay would pick up the ball with his back to goal and immediately turn and face the play and drive find a killer ball or have a pop. Calmac has too much of a tendency, when receiving the ball with his back to goal to just offload it back the way.
