Bring him home as Celtic Free Kick coach.
Would be brilliant that every player could take free kicks like him.

    He can't speak English though...

Even after 3 years at Celtic he still had an interpreter. :56:

It appears the word evergreen may have been coined for Shunsuke Nakamura.

At the age of 41, the legendary Celtic playmaker has just signed a new deal with Jubilo Iwata in the J League.

Nakamura, famed for for his free-kicks, is the only player to have been named as the Japanese top flight’s most valuable player more than once.

He was awarded the gong in 2000 and 2013 and it seems Nakamura is still going strong.

The No.10 enjoyed four seasons in Glasgow after signing from Reggina in 2005 for around £2million.

His signing was to help inspire Gordon Strachan’s to the title and he went on to win another two SPL championships as well as a Scottish Cup and two League Cups.

But he is best known for his two stunning free-kick goals against Manchester United – in 2006 at Celtic Park and Old Trafford

Such as his prowess as a dead-ball specialist, Copa90 on Thursday have named the veteran in their top 11 free-kick takers of all time, joining the likes of David Beckham, Sinisa Mihajlovic and Roberto Carlos.

IT was on this day 41 years ago, on June 24, 1978 that Shunsuke Nakamura was born in Yokohama, Japan.

After catching the eye with hometown team, Yokohama F Marinos, he moved to Italy where he joined Reggina, and in 2005 he was on his way to Celtic.

The attacking midfielder became a superstar in the Hoops and netted 33 goals in 168 games for the side before moving to Spain.

Here we take a brief look at some Celtic snippets from his time in the Hoops.

    Shunsuke Nakamura

Born: June 24, 1978 in Yokohama, Japan.

Joined: July 29, 2005 from Reggina

Left: June 23, 2009 to Espanyol

    FIRST GAME

August 6, 2005, League, Celtic 2-0 Dundee United, Celtic Park

Shunsuke Nakamura was the unrivalled star of the show in a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Dundee United. John Hartson and a stunning late volley from Craig Beattie sealed the victory, but the vision, invention and trickery of the new Bhoy was the most significant plus point from a match that ended with the Hoops faithful buzzing with excitement about their new idol. From the moment he strolled on to Celtic Park’s lush, sun-kissed turf, Nakamura was immediately the centre of attention, and it quickly became clear that he would also be the player through whom most of Celtic’s attacks would start. Nakamura could, in fact, have marked his debut with a goal inside the opening minute, with the Japanese midfielder starting and very nearly finishing a move which ended with Stuart Duff clearing a goal-bound glancing header off the line

    NICKNAME

He didn’t really have a nickname as such, unless you count the old school playground tradition of just shortening everybody’s surname, and to this day he is still known to the adoring Celtic faithful as plain old Naka. He was dubbed the ‘Baggio d’Oriente’ from his time in Italy with Reggina but ‘The Baggio from the East’ moniker didn’t travel well to Glasgow. On the other hand, the phonetically alliterative ‘Japanese Genius’ did roll off the tongue easily and did surface a few times, as did ‘The Man from Japan’ in numerous goalscoring free-kick descriptions on TV and in the papers. However, some of those goals, including his two against Manchester United and the one against Rangers, were just indescribable – thanks Naka.

    HOOPS HIGHPOINT

April 22, 2007, league, Kilmarnock 1-2 Celtic, Rugby Park

There were still five league games left to play from which to earn the three points need to win the title when Celtic rolled up at Rugby Park on Sunday, April 22, 2007 and they looked like wrapping it up on the day when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink opened the scoring in the 24th minute. However, Colin Nish pulled one back for the home side just five minutes after the break. That’s the way it stayed until the 90th minute and as the game moved into time added on, it looked as though the Celtic supporters’ planned celebrations would have to wait until the following week and another tilt at the title when Hearts visited Paradise. That is, it looked that way until the 92nd minute when Gary Wales bundled over Shunsuke Nakamura 22 yards from the Kilmarnock goal. Taking a run-up at right angles to the goal, he curled in a superb shot over the players of both teams and into the keeper’s bottom right-hand corner of the net – a title-winning shot.

    LAST GAME

May 24, 2009, League, Celtic 0-0 Hearts, Celtic Park

Celtic still had a slim chance of making it four-in-a-row on the final day of the season, but they had to beat Hearts and hope that Dundee United beat Rangers at Tannadice. As it turned out, the Ibrox side won 3-0, meaning the 0-0 draw with Hearts didn’t matter. The game started with a rousing rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone but Hearts weren’t there just to make up the numbers, despite Celtic's dominance in the game. Shunsuke Nakamura, always probing for an opening, came close with a free-kick in the ninth minute. With everyone expecting a trademark curler, the Japanese star went for a low effort but Marian Kello saved. However, the Japanese playmaker had his heart set on playing in the La Liga and that became possible when Espanyol made a move for the player that close season.

Any way of tempting him to be a coach for us? Work with the players to teach them set piece mastery.
