Mikael Lustig signed a contract today which means that he will play for the Buffalos in the coming 3 seasons. Lustig is a 32-year-old Swedish international who plays as a right back but can also manage centrally. He comes from Celtic Glasgow where he worked for 7.5 seasons.

He started his career with the Swedish third division Umeå FC, after which he made the switch to GIF Sundvall in 2008, which will play in the Swedish first class. There he was picked up by the Norwegian Rosenborg BK, after which he left for Celtic Glasgow in 2012. At Celtic Glasgow he hit the net 16 times and delivered 24 assists.

Sporting manager Peter Verbeke about our new acquisition: “Although Mikael is already 32, he has played more than 40 games for Celtic in recent seasons. In addition, he is still a fixture with the Swedish national team. More importantly, he was able to convince us of his enormous drive to fully go for a new project after 8 consecutive titles with Celtic. Mikael has the winner's mentality and leadership qualities that our team, and certainly our youngsters, need. ”

    European experience
Throughout his career, Mikael has been able to participate in many European campaigns. With 4 Champions League and 6 Europa League campaigns , he has a lot of experience. He was against Anderlecht in the Champions League last season. He played 25 matches on the champion ball, 24 in the Europa League and 6 in the former UEFA Cup. In total, Lustig has already played 105 European games (including qualifying rounds).

    75-time Swedish international
As a Swedish international he collected no less than 75 caps. He is seen there as a fixed value in the national team. Last year he defended the Swedish colors at the FIFA World Cup in Russia . Sweden came in group F and competed for a ticket to the next round against South Korea, Germany, Mexico. Sweden won her group. In the Round of 16 they played Switzerland, they won 1-0. In the quarterfinals they had to lay their thumbs against England. Previously, Lustig also attended the 2012 and 2016 European Championships.

    Overcrowded prize cabinet
Lustig has so far collected just 19 prizes . He was 8 times champion with Celtic between 2011 and 2019 and won 4 cups and 4 League Cups. At Rosenborg he won two national titles(2009 and 2010) and the Supercup.

Like Celtic, Lustig will play with number 23. We warmly welcome him to the Buffalos!

3 years at Gent is a fantastic deal for him. It’s a good deal for them as well, adding such a * winner to their squad (in a far less physical league) is a boost for them.

Physicality isn't his problem, its pace and I'd bet they have a lot more of it in Belgium than here

Find it a bit mad anyone giving him a 3 year deal. He finds it very difficult to last 90 minutes and has legs like twigs.

It’s one of his biggest problems for me, everytime he picks up a slight knock early on he’d struggle to move properly.

So glad we didn’t give him another contract as it forces us to move on and finally replace him.

He was a weak link for years.
