For every one of those names, there will be about 5 male writers. Why is that?

Smack The Pony was a comedy show with a full female cast in the main sketch roles. Was fantastic, the shows are still funny to this day.
Majority of the writing credits on each episode were women too. Nothing to do with equality, purely talent. Sally Phillips, Doon Mackichan, Fiona Allen & Sarah Alexander, four extremely talented comedic ladies.
If you have it you have it, simple.

Then why is there so much evidence that there are barriers for women in writing?

I wouldn't say Smack the Pony was all that great, couple of bearable sketches but nothing special. Sally Phillips and Sarah Doon mackichan are involved in some comedy I like and they're good, but it's mostly acting parts written by males.

Ms Schuster said she was only receiving one script submission from a female writer for every five scripts written by a man.

So isn't it right that she takes a proactive approach in order to give more opportunities to female writers? She covers that, if you read the information in the Spoiler tags, on the previous page.

Aren't women given the same opportunities as men to be writers nowadays? There could be an argument now that they are given even more than men with initiatives like this one from ITV. Maybe the reason there aren't more women writers is because women on average don't want to become writers as much as men do, the same could be said with tons of other jobs for both men and women.

The fifth writer on every tv show will be that guy that does Mrs Brown's Boys dressed as an old woman.

I've been trying to think of a witty and edgy sexist joke to blast in here but it turns out I'm as unfunny as most women.

Not sure what Brighton Belles is but I was thinking the same thing tbh. You might as well say the weather channel are going to make sure 1 in 5 comedy writers is female.

Don’t agree with this, similar thing to the BBC making sure every panel show has a woman on it which is bullshit too because eventually you get that * one who’s whole personality revolves around owning a *.

I don’t fall into the category of people that can’t stand women stand ups but it’s a fact that in general people find men to be funnier and it has nothing got to do with their gender.

Some of my favourite female comedians are lou sanders, Jessica knapett, aisling bea, Ellie Taylor and Roisin Conaty

I like them because they have actually material and don’t spend every second they get talking about how they’re a woman and making jokes about periods and being in a relationship.

Brighton Belles was ITV's horrendous remake of the Golden Girls.

    A year later, but aye.

I wonder, what would be the response if we demanded that it should be a 50/50 quota for nurses and care workers?
How many females would suddenly be sacked in favour of men?
