Like others have said I’m more scared of leaving people behind. It depresses me thinking of my wife not having me there to look after her or to hug her etc or the other way around. I would be so lost and sad without her

I have the occasionally weird bouts of panic laying in bed thinking * I'll die one day but I think it's more associated with my life than the fear of death

I will never be left to see my days out in a care home. I'll go out as dignified as is possible. I visited someone who was in a care home for a few years and can honestly say death would be a much nicer option. I used to people watch and see some cases where they were active and walking into not being able to get out of a chair or communicate. Drugged up and left to sit in their own mess and I have seen carer's leave dinners down to people who couldn't feed themselves and back half hour later to take away the untouched meal. Wouldn't get that * in Italy, Spain or Portugal where the elderly are held in high respect and still head the family. * basic values.

I worry about those left more than I would ever worry about my own death.
Death is the easy part, it's living that's the hard part.

Death doesn’t scare me so much, but the thought of dying while on the job does scare the life out of me.

    Interesting and healthy question...

When I was very young I was obsessed with death. I mean, you've only just realised you're alive when you learn about death, so *???? I remember plaguing my mother with ontological and existential questions, including: how old are you when you die? And in her exasperation she replied: you die when you're a hundred. Even then I knew it was bollocks but even so...I remember waking on my ninth birthday in a cold sweat, thinking: only 91 more years...

These days (pushing 60) I'm not so concerned. The real tragedy is dying before you're time and I've known a few people go long before they should have.

In fact, to me that's one of life's great mysteries. Grief is surely the strongest emotion there is, with the most to teach, yet the average person who reaches the age of 50 must have experienced grief at least five times. The first time I felt strong grief, about the age of 21, I would have given anything to see that person for just five more minutes to say what hadn't been properly said.

And yet, we never quite treat our family, friends and lovers like that when they're alive.

    Very odd.
