Naw. The number on your back shouldn't really have any impact on how you play for Celtic.

It'll always be associated with Larsson and people will fondly remember him doing the business wearing it (with the exception of @PaulM1888) but I'd rather that was the bar set for others to aspire to, rather than retire it.

If it was going to happen, it would, or perhaps should, have happened after Henrik, and probably just as notably, following the passing of wee Jinky, only a couple of years after Henrik left for Barca.

I do get the concept, as it's a well established practice in other sports that I follow, such as baseball, however I don't see it happening, so no.

Indeed, one could argue that the number 8 has equally been prestigious, with the lineage of Paul McStay, Alan Thompson and Scott Brown meaning that 3 players pretty much have owned that shirt for the past 35 years. Indeed that website that @Marie quoted above notes those are the only 3 players that have been tracked wearing it, whether that is true or not, but I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head that has, and I've been following Celitc since the early 80's. Never once heard a peep about anyone wanting to retire that, despite that pedigree.

Or while we are at it, the number 25, with Lubo & Naka, and more recently Stefan Johansen - which is not bad going either.

The point is, I can't see it happening, and especially now that the concept of squad numbers being assigned as opposed to positional numbers, as when was the last time we saw 1-11 take the field (actually that would be a pretty interesting trivia question)? But with squad numbers, it is all a bit of a lottery as there is no certainty that just because a player has a particular number that they are going to be amazing.

If it matters, the number 7 could be held in reserve, either for a special player if they sign, or, if after a couple of years have proven themselves worthy, to then inherit it, rather than it simply been retired completely. But retiring it outright? No. Think that horse has bolted.

Really dont think any number should be retired.

Wearing a number which was worn by a top player should be an inspiration to a player and a reminder of the levels he needs to aim for.

If anything it should be used as tool to remind players of whats expected of them and they should be told if ye dont meet the requirements of wearing the jersey then your out.

I really dislike sports teams retiring numbers, tbh.

The only time I actually find it acceptable is if a great tragedy happens to a player while wearing that number.

Personally I think there are better ways to honour someone, but I can see the argument for it then.

It was quite bold of Victor to choose 67 but it seemed to inspire him. So the 7 should be inspiring too. From a fan's point of view, I would never expect a player to carry the weight of history if they were assigned or chose it, as Jock said "we must make new legends."

Sorry @DonnyCelt I just noticed your post mentioning the same thing :50:
