I've not looked at that exactly, but when looking for insurance initially it was really high just for the insurance.

Should probably be noted, only been driving for 6 months. Hence the old car.

I need the car to probably last me another 4-6 months, which I think it will, before I get to the position of getting something newer/cheaper to run etc.

Depends. I paid £260 one off payment (could have paid £25 monthly) for Breakdown cover and Breakdown Repair cover.
This covers At Home, Onward Travel, National Recovery plus Breakdown Repair cover.
The Repair cover allows you 5 claims a year with £35 excess each claim as long as 2 claims in a row are NOT for same reason.
    Here is a link.
    https://www.theaa.com/breakdown-cover/uk-breakdown/view-options.do?optMshp=vcon100&policyType=mJust check it out.
You can be covered for any vehicle that you are in so if you are in a friends car and it breaks dow you are covered to get it home (Repair cover doesnt include that, just your own vehicle)

Just to clarify, this is NOT for insurance so you dont need to take out breakdown cover with your insurance policy if you dont want to.

Ah, so can go separate for AA breakdown without having actual insurance with them?

Wont be much, it's an exhaust part. My garage charged me £2.50 + part. Covered his coffee for the day he said :56:

Even if not, an exhaust is a ten minute job, theyll charge 30 mins or possibly an hour depending in garage. So fitting £40 most.

As i said, my Merc C200's coolant fan assembly * up and it would have cost me £500 inc labour to get it fixed but only cost £35 due to having Breakdown Repair cover

    A quick look.
Lots of exclusions. Exhaust system excluded anyway apart from catalytic converter
You have to prove if asked, that car has been fully maintained with correct parts & not covering anything that’s mentioned on previous bills as advisories etc. Or serviceable parts
Looks similar to a lot of other covers but quite a lot cheaper to buy which obviously means lower payout limit.
Might still be worth it for some people though.

You would have been out of pocket with cover.

    I didn’t necessarily mean you:50:

When money is tight servicing costs get sacrificed if the car seems to be running ok.
Or back street garages are used for cheap repairs, often using cheap non genuine parts.

The AA will probably (like most insurance companies) try to wheedle out of paying where they can.
As I said, still seems ok for some people.

If you want to service it your self itll save hundreds and is simple. You can get a oil pump for £20/30. Slip the tube down the dip stick and it sucks near every last drop out. Refill with oil. I even dropped the sump plug after doing it and got about 2 drips out. After all the cars old, no one will care the service history if you can show oil receipts etc.

I never read further down about the cover. Sounds a bargain on an older car tbh.

Yeah, that should fool the professionals.

    “FSH young man?”

    “Absolutely, here’s my oil receipts”

    “That’s for chips”

    “Didn’t think you would mind”

    “Have a nice day”

It does, but you only paid £2.50. You would have been well out of pocket.
