HBO have put up the pilot for the new Aaron Sorkin show, Newsroom. Enjoy:

I wasn't sure if I'd give the show a chance or not, after reading the reviews. I can definitely identify with the critics calling it 'preachy', which it outrageously and most assuredly is, and I can kind of see where someone might be coming from when they accuse the show of being 'intellectually self-serving', but screw that. I despise the notion that it is an offense to be idealistic. If the first episode is anything to go by, I'll be eating this up.

    Keep 'em coming, Sorkin.

That vid is not being allowed to be shown outside of the US.

I wonder if this is to be along a similiar line/format as Sorkin used with 'Sportsnight'?

Few episodes in, anyone watching this yet?

I believe Sky Atlantic are an episode behind, but what are people's thoughts?

Two episodes have been shown here - as a matter of fact have caught up with these just today & characterized with some of that typically brilliant Sorkin repartee. I was thinking it was going to be more akin to Sports Night, but thankfully the emphasis is not reliant on canned laughs. A cross between 'West Wing' and the Albert Brooks' movie from the 80's, 'Broadcast News'. :50:

Sports Night was great and should have got a longer run than just two series. I hope this turns out to be just as good.

Just finished watching through this series for a second time... This time consecutively rather than spaced a week apart. Brilliant show. Without a shadow of a doubt, Aaron Sorkin is the best writer working in the entertainment industry. Masterful.

He's a genius. So what if it's idealistic and so what if it's a big liberal circle *, it is ridiculously enjoyable to see Sorkin's condemnation of tabloids, the Tea Party and Fox News.

My only problem with the show is the rampant amount of sexism in the scripts, but oh well.

I don't see that as an inherant flaw with the script as a whole. Rather it is part of the make up of 1 perhaps 2 characters in particular - where it is there by design & which helps bring a realism that role. The only other thread where this is in evidence is the 'troll' story thread toward the end of the series. Then again there is an element of realism in this, if not so much how it is discussed, the context in which it is to be used that is there, once again, by design.

I watched the whole of season 1 consecutively and enjoyed it quite a lot. Are they doing a second season?

Yes! Although they'll have to wait for more news to 'happen' first!

I don't really see how the scripts are sexist, yeah some characters are sexist, but they are characters and it is supposed to be realistic. Loved the show, although I did prefer when they just done different actual news instead of focus on the scripted stuff like the company being sold etc. I really wish they'd kept it going, even if itwas only a series every 2/3 years. Lots of "good" material that they could use has happened since they cancelled it, would like to see how they'd tackle the different Paris attacks, Trump, maybe even the Scottish/EU referendums.

Loved this show, and agree, the best stuff was when it was based on real news events.

Sorkin's medium is definitely better on the small screen, where over so many episodes he has so much time that he can flesh out characters far more than it is possible in a film, and as the films he scripted recently (Social Network, Jobs etc) I don't think manage to do this quite as well.

Have been thinking of doing another rewatch of West Wing - it's probably been 5/6yrs since the last time.

Completely agree about the characters, there are so many great and complex ones in both shows. The dialogue and "banter" between them is what makes the shows for me, it never seems to get old.

Watched the first couple of episodes of this last night.

Might the best premiere of any series I’ve seen. Thought it was outstanding.

Some of the patter is brilliant as well :giggle1:

That scene and the whole first episode was brilliant I thought.

Can’t ever remember seeing a show start as strong as that and gives so much story while setting everything up in the first episode.

Hopefully continues as strongly as it started.
