    Most influential defender in the game atm but POTY in the Premiership should be Bernardo Silva, IMHO - esp. since I believe City will defend the title, in large part due to his influence

    Henderson was part of the club when Virgil van Dijk joined in the summer of 2013 and admits he's not surprised in the slightest with the Dutchman's incredible rise.

    The 27-year-old joined Liverpool in a £75million deal from Southampton in January 2017 and is now regarded by many as the finest defender on the planet.

    And his former Hoops pal says you could tell from day one that van Dijk was going all the way to the top.

    He added: "He's a legend, first and foremost. What a guy he is.

    "When he signed for Celtic it was my first pre-season away, so all the young boys and the new signings sat at the same table because they didn't really know anybody.

    "Virgil was amazing and he's doing the exact same things in the Premier League and the Champions League as he was doing at Celtic.

    The boys here (at Verona) even comment on how easy he makes it look and he was doing that in Scotland while playing with a cigar in his mouth."

    "Players like Joe Ledley and van Dik were incredible and would give you pointers and advice."

    Messi will still win it, obviously (and I am biased that way I will want him to), but it says everything that Virgil is the next favourite behind the golden boy. As a defender as well.

    He's likely to win the CL and La Liga double. VVD could well end up at barca in another £150mill move.
